hi everyone:

i was reading a few of the threads on the pre-dent forum and ran into a few interesting posts on coming back from a subpar GPA. i am not sure if dental adcom is more lax than medical adcom, but these threads were along the subjects of GPA repair and how to do so. examples included:

taking classes at different colleges with similar course content. (sometimes, one school won't let you take a variant of a course such as Calculus 1 from the "pure" Math department and then taking it again at the Applied math dept) for example, one of the dental students in repairing her GPA took the following courses: Foundations of Genetics at CUNY, then Gene Expression at SUNY, then Genetic Engineering at SUNY, getting A's and higher in all. Another example: took Differential equations, vector calculus and linear algebra at SUNY, then take mathematical methods for physicists (which is essentially a summary of the aforementioned subjects) at CUNY. another example: take organic chem 1/2 at CUNY, then honors organic chem at SUNY. i guess you guys all get the point:

does adcoms for med schools frown upon this? I guess this only applies to students coming back from an atrocious GPA (<3.0), but it's interseting to note this worked well for dent school.

When the names of the courses sound really similar, it's a dead giveaway. Otherwise, I doubt they would care but is that really the best use of your money? Your money is better spent on actual other math, physics, etc. courses that help you become a more knowledgeable person rather than for the sole purpose of gaming the system.

So long as the course prefix number rises with time, one might get away with the above approach at OOS schools. In one's home state, it would likely raise eyebrows as adcomms would be more aware of course equivalencies and relative difficulty at their most common feeder schools.

When seeking to raise one's application GPA for med school, it's faster and cheaper to replace low grades by retaking a course with a same credit hours and invoking grade forgiveness through applying to AACOMAS DO medical schools. I haven't heard of a similar option for dental school applicants.
