Hi. I'm a nursing/premed major in Tennessee. I'm looking potentialy at two schools as a first choice and another school(it has a low GPA average and Mcat average so I'm assuming it isn't as good a school) as a second. In the event that I can't get into any of these, I'm considering DO as an option but I've heard that I will have some difficulties with residency placement and licensing tests if I go DO.

My first picks are Ut Memphis(Average MCAt 29 Average GPA 3.67) and East tennessee State University(Average MCAt 29 Average GPA 3.73).

My second choice is Meharry(Average MCAt 25 Average GPA 3.15)

I don't have any averages in Tennessee for DO schools. (Overall the averages I've seen for the US are something like MCAt 24 and GPA 3.4)(We have a new school called Debussy now. I'm going to a Q and A seminar next week offered by them to gather some information.)

So I'm having some difficulties figuring out what scores are competitive. I've still got two years of undergrad left. I should have a GPA somewhere between 3.3 to 3.5(really too many variables here to predict accurately. It's the same with the MCAt.)

So what I was wanting to know is, ignoring the MCAt(I'm gonna assume I get the average MCAt grade. I actually plan to do a little better than average on it but I can't be sure.), how low can my GPA be and still be competitive for my first two choices?

I'm also interested in opinions on the difference between MD and DO schools as well as the effect going to a lower GPA school(Meharry) would have on my career and residence placement.

Another question is about volunteer work and actual work. I'll more than likely do at least 100 hours of volunteer work in a hospital and work as a nurse for up to 2 years before I apply.(I've got a few personell issues preventing me from entering Med school immediately after graduation.) Will this be of any significant help to me? I don't know if any research opportunities will open up for me or if I will have time to complete them because I work during school. What else would be a good addition to my resume?

Thanks
