Does anyone know what is correlated more with class success in med school, MCAT or GPA? I am not concerned with the board scores for this question.

I definitely think GPA for med school academic success. I mean, most of the upper division bio classes from undergrad are actual med school classes (anatomy, physio, developmental, histology, etc)!

I actually think med schools should go by your biology GPA instead of all science . . . that would be a better indicator of your academic success in med school , IMHO. 🙂

Everyone has a different idea for this. There probably is no correlation that can lead to a concrete conclusion.

I agree with you there. It only matters how much work you put in.

I think that anatomy or human bio should be a requirement b/c it's like they're judging how well we can be doctor's based on how much we know about things that sometimes don't relate to human medicine. Much of the stuff we learn in these pre reqs are gone by the time we get into med school. I showed a doctor my mcat book and he was like "oh i could never do that stuff." They need to change pre reqs to look at more things that are relevant to medical knowledge.

I am no drosophila:laugh:

I think Maturity is most related to success in medical schools...
how do you see someone's maturity? Just look at thier GPA lol

GPA is not a "smartness" scale indicator, its more of a "do you take your education seriously".... which turns out to be a sign for maturity

MED school care more about your BCPM then your AO gpa.
I think it goes like
BCPM
MCAT
AO

my 2 cents

Every med school is different about what they look for. Trust me on this one.

Personally, from what I have experienced is that neither really cooresponds. I study so much differently than I ever have before that it makes it hard to compare from before. I think I am a better student now than I ever have been, but that is my story.......and I am sticking to it 😀 😎

Well said; sounds like the most reasonable explanation I've heard yet. I also happen to believe doing well in class is mostly a function of your drive. Just about anybody of average intelligence can score at least Bs or higher in college. Maybe straight As requires more smarts, but for the most part, just doing well requires maturity as the biggest factor.

But there are more things that are involved in your GPA calculation than your maturity. There are very immature people that excel in school and mature ones that fail. Some people work and go to school full-time, so they don't have as much time to put into courses. And, there are some courses that are harder for people: not everyone can master chemistry or write wonderful papers. GPA is not the best measure of m:laugh:turity that a school can look at.
