Sorry for posting if it was already posted, but I cannot find any GPA threads in this forum.

Anywho, what is the average GPA of a Pre-Osteopathy student. I'm probably going to finish up my bachelor's next year. I don't know if DO schools use a standardized service for applications or not, but basically, my transcript GPA is a 3.23, but on systems like PharmCAS or AMCAS, it gets reduced to 2.7-2.9 because I failed Organic Chem the first time and I did really well the second time. My school drops the lower grade when you retake classes.

the schools look at all your grades, but they only factor in the repeat for your gpa. According to AACOMAS it is 3.45, but it varies within the individual

New O-Chem grade will replace old O-Chem grade (as far as I understand it) for GPA calculation.

What is the average GPA??? This is a loaded question really because there are way more factors than GPA that are taken into considerations and because of this there is a HUGE range of GPAs for accepted applicants.

Click on the mdapplicants profiles for some of the posters here to see what their GPAs are. Or go to http://www.mdapplicants.com and look at some of the accepted students to some of the DO schools you might be interested in.

I don't know if they have the information "of all osteopathic matriculants". The way to go about that would be to go to the various schools you're interested in, or, if you don't know which schools you're interested in, to all 30-some schools' websites. Most have this information pretty readily available.

You should probably do a little research on this process. The standardized primary application is the AACOMAS (aacomas.aacom.org). From what I've read others saying before (I never had to deal with this so I don't know firsthand), it also drops the grade of a retaken class and replaces it with the higher grade.

A 3.3 cumulative with a science GPA (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics) that's around the same will be competitive when supplemented by a strong MCAT (25 or greater) and strong clinical experience.

AACOMAS does grade replacement like your college does. GPA is still a little low though. Mine was too. I had a 3.25 I think, or 3.2 or something like that. Rock the MCAT and you should be ok.

Would my job at a pharmacy suffice for patient care experience or should I try to get a job at a hospital instead? Every position I find is unpaid. With my car payments and train tickets, I can't afford to not have a job that pays at least $11/hour.

I'm registered for the May MCAT, I started the Pre-Professional Committee Application at my school. When should I start the process with AACOMAS?

I really don't care if I go via the M.D. or D.O. route, I don't see a difference, although I know that I am not interested at all in primary care. I am interested more in emergency medicine, orthopedics, sports medicine.

The thing with the GPA Forgiveness is that, I don't want to be automatically taken off a school list that uses a GPA cutoff. I'm pretty sure there are computer programs that these schools use to automatically take out anyone below a certain GPA, it's like those dating services that automatically take out people based on age.

I highly doubt only working at a pharmacy will be enough. You don't have to do a job at a hospital where you're there daily, just joining a volunteer program where you're only there for a few hours (3 or 4) once a week would probably show that you've had some exposure to the clinical aspect of medicine. If you know a doctor (or you can look one up in the yellow pages and call), ask them if they can let you shadow them for a few hours every week, that should help too.

i'll have a 2.9 but a high mcat score of 37...theres' another thread about my misery and mcats but dont wrry why its so lopsided.

my questions is...is this competitive? Do i even have a chance??

I think some schools have a cutoff of 3.0... I would be prepared to explain the dichotomy between your gpa and mcat.
