Hello,

I am a second year student and have been extremely satisfied with my education. I want to advance my education, hopefully getting into more complicated cases (implants, 3m extractions, etc) but don't want to go to a GPR or AEGD that is essentially a 5th year and not learn anything new.

Since I'm only in the beginning of my dental education, I'm not too familiar with the difference between the two and the process of applications. Can someone be kind enough to describe the differences, how to figure out which programs would challenge me to take that next step forward, and ways to improve my resume or show that I'm serious in their program?

Thank you!

Refer to the ADA for differences b/w the two: http://www.ada.org/en/education-car...al-education/program-options-and-descriptions

In terms of figuring out which school is best for you, that's all based on personal opinion, so you'll have to look more into specific programs since there are a lot of GPR/AEGD programs. Generally it should not be super difficult to get into an AEGD/GPR program, but you should definitely have a goal of being in the top half of your class.

First, ignore whether the program calls itself an AEGD or GPR. You don't choose a dental school on whether you get a DMD or DDS. It all depends on the program itself (yes I know there are slightly different requirements...usually more hospital based is GPR)...Look at the individual programs. There are some really great worthwhile programs (independent of them being labeled as GRP or AEGD) and some not so much. If you want to do private practice (if you want to teach or work in a hospital this may be different) there are handful of programs that are worthwhile and will teach you things that private practice may not offer...otherwise just find a good practice to go to.
