Ok, I'm going to just disagree with the broad invective you've painted here. That may have been your experience, and maybe it will be mine in the future too. But this hasn't been my experience so far. Maybe it's because I did the AEGD here right out of school, maybe not. But everyone here has been great to the soldiers, me, and the docs at the other clinics. Some of what you said is baseless. As you said, bad people could apply to other situations like being an associate, in corporate, etc (where you also often have contracts, just shorter). Most beginning dentists don't just open their own practices straight out of school.

Sorry you guys have all had such harrowing experiences.
I was going to add that generally your first command whether it’s an AEGD or Credentialing tour will be your best experience. You have a bigger budget and better materials, you are doing a larger variety of procedures, you don’t have the pressure of “readiness” hovering over you because they understanding you are in the learning year. I loved my first year. Did everything with specialist guidance. Met a ton of good people. Definitely the highlight of my time in the military.

From my experience, once you leave the learning stage they expect you to do a job. If you are not a specialist then the job will be restorative and exams. Certain commands will need help with NSRCT’s and Extractions. It’s going to be very dependent on the command though. I was on a ship where I could order all my own supplies and do whatever procedures I wanted, which was a pretty cool experience. Except i was 1 year out of school and would have loved to have a little more guidance. So I remained conservative on certain treatment plans.

Once I left the ship and went to a big clinic with a lot specialists and an AEGD my job was exams and restorative (including simple prosth). I wiggled my way into Endo a couple times a week because I knew I wanted to specialize but it wasn’t easy. No CADCAM, implants, complex fixed, surgical ext., etc.

To do anything besides restorative and exams at bigger clinics you have to basically pick one specialty (prosth, OS, Endo or Perio), get in good with the department, and they will let you work there a couple times a week. Helps if you desire to specialize in that field as well.

You’re lucky to have had that kinda opportunity to do specialty procedures few times a week close to 2 years i did nothing but od and simple restorative because of an dingus of a CO and his cronies were pos human beings who basically ran a dental sweat shop so they can get all the credit and praise from their bosses
