Hi,
I'm just begininng to look at MPH programs and I was wondering if there was any difference between applying to a grad school of public health versus a grad program? Also, anyone know which ones can be done in a year?

Thanks in advance!

schools of public health may have more resources and more faculty devoted specifically to public health; plus, they seem to offer multiple programs like MPH, MS, etc.... public health programs I have found are usually housed within a medical school, offering one degree program and have smaller numbers of students enrolled. Google ASPH. Also, you can find a list of every accredited program and school at the CEPH website (google CEPH)

My feeling is that established schools of public health have an edge over those that are programs within other types of schools.

Schools are more likely to have more financial and faculty resources, more and an array of internships, assistanceships, etc. PH schools are more likely to have many options for courses and tracks. I think this is in part because schools are probably more likely to have been around awhile, where they may have started off as 'just' programs.

This is just my opinion, but if you're an MPH student in a small program within a Medical School? You'll end up pushed to the bottom as the vast majority of resources appropriated to the Med school will be for Med student fellowships, faculty research, and course/track options for those students. Sucks, but its just life. Maybe public health will soon be valued for its worth!!!

Good luck!
