Hi guys,

I'm currently a senior and I plan on applying to dental school during the 2012 cycle. By the end of this year I'm hoping that I can get my bcp/sci gpa above 3.0 so that I can at least try my luck when applying.

As a backup, I applied to the UMDNJ masters program in case my gpa isn't high enough. My question is, if I get into the masters program and decide to attend AND apply to dental school (if my gpa is above 3.0), will they not accept my app?

I understand that most schools want to see you finish your masters, but if my gpa is fine at the end of my senior year and I'm going to grad school just to take more science classes, will they consider my app or will they still want to see me finish the masters?

Thanks.

Go with your undergraduate university, if they offer Master's program. I did that with my state university.

well UMDNJ is the state med school/ dent school

but i'm deciding whether or not i should apply for the 2012 cycle or the 2013 cycle

I would recommend going for another one or two undergraduate semesters. Either repeat bad grades or take upper level biology courses.

I did a Masters program and I was told by UMDNJ specifically that if you are enrolled in a graduate program, they will not consider your application until you have earned your Master's degree. Others schools are different, so it's best to contact each school individually and get their advice.

I also completed a masters degree and was told by almost every school that they would like to see me complete the program prior to matriculating into dental school. However, once you are done your masters... the schools will be lining up for you (as long as you've worked your tail off to do extremely well). If you go the post-bac route (taking additional science coursework at your local university)... you can be admitted at any point, but it would take a lot of classes to pull your GPA up... a masters will be a separate GPA
