Grading system

You mean while you are actually in dental school?

At my school, the policy states that you can remediate a module if you score below a "C" grade in the module. You can only remediate two modules a semester before being given the boot.

Other schools have similar policies. However, if you made it into dental school then I wouldn't worry about getting failing grades. My experience is that you can do nearly nothing and get a "C," while those "A" grades are really hard to come by in comparison.

so if all you want to be is a general practicioner it's a cake walk (i.e. just get that 2.5 or whatever the standard is to graduate)???!!!

Yep. Although, I don't know many people who can be personally satisfied getting Cs in every class, even if they only want to do general dentistry. There is something about our human nature that compels us to do the best that we can, and that certainly comes into play with dental school grades.

Also, keep in mind that the better you learn the material during your courses, the easier it comes back to you when the Boards roll around.

At NYUCD you can fail three classes a year and remdiate them during the summer. Its an "A", "B", "C", "P", "F" system here.

You have to do your fair share of work here to get a "C". I think thats why a lot of students get in trouble here. Its easier to get in here so I think, but not sure, they think the classes will be easy. I have gotten scores on exams ranging from 64 - 92 in my science classes and all with equal amounts of studying. I know of kids that study two days before and always get in the 50's...can't really do that. You have to understand the material because a lot of it on the exam is putting A + B to get C. Can't just memorize the facts, although sometimes you could get by studying like that.

Here is an example of a fact exam: Old anatomy exam

killer piece of evidence Broc.

Gavin - so why not do what you have to do pass (grade wise) then spend more time dominating the boards?

That's exactly the path that I have chosen, although I probably got in too late in the game.

When I say that next to nothing can get a "C," I'm talking about probably spending 10-12 hours studying for an exam. It seems like 20-25 hours is good for a "B," and lots more for an "A".

Of course, that varies from class to class, and the first semester we only had teachers for one week and were tested every week before moving to a new course, so that has skewed my opinions about grading somewhat.

yeah, if i can get into to d-school, that is ultimately the path i will want to travel. leave specializing to all the gunners. i wouldn't even mind becoming a professor at a d-school.

question about zona for you gavin, it's a private school right? so in-state isn't really preferred correct? i ask this cause i'm a wisco resident.

wow, your exams must be hard or cover more material than ours... i rarely have spent more than 10-12 hours studying for any exam...

then again, we did have 49 exams during the year, so we probably just have them more frequently...

i can't get the pdf to work? something wrong with my viewer you think?

I just clicked it and it workes in my browser. Make sure you have Adobe Acrobat reader installed

here I have to study days for exams not hours. I think this holds true for the majority of my class. They cover everything under the sun here

We've had close to 49, but probably not that many. My quiz transcript shows 39 exams, plus a couple of anatomy lab practicalas and 2-3 other exams that weren't electronic.

I've rarely spend 10-12 hours studying for any exam either. 😀

am i wrong or was that anatomy exam all related to the head (which would be obvious since it is dental school and finger anatomy is irrelevant)? i dont think it was that bad. especially since you will taught some of the material, i could pull a C on that exam easy with 1-2 hours of studying. i'll post my UNDERGRADUATE physiology summer final when it's done in 3 weeks, i think it's on par with what you presented so i am confident in the education i'm getting.

Well one to two hours will give you roughly about 10% grade. This is not play school. Each exam has about 20 hours worth of info or ten lectures. So you have to read 10+ lectures. Here is one lecture. Do not tell me you could read and memorize/understand this in two hours (and remember its only one lecture). I edit the transcript to remove names of people in my class. This is (1) two hour lecture:

You know what. There are a few in my class that lurk here...post and tell these people what is all about...brian, thats you man 🙂

We need more than the Brocnizer to represent NYUCD 2007

Dental school requires lots of memorization, but I haven't found any of it to be difficult. In fact, as far as difficulty goes, I think I had some math classes in high school that were far more difficult than anything we'll encounter in dental school.

I guess it depends where you go because by no means are our classes compared to anything in highschool and I took AP calculus my senior year.

still not impressed or intimidated by those lecture notes. there is a lot of jargon in there and i could condense all that info into five pages of pure info. 150 pages (10 lectures at 15 pages each) doesn't sound all that tough to go over. again, i would not be shooting for an A, merely a C or low B. i dont know what your capabilities for memorizing are or retention of material, but i could do fine with minimal studying.

Sorry to bust your bubble again. I was about to post notes that are condensed but its too big. Its 50 pages of pure info. PM me your email and I will send it. If anything it is a great review for you when you start.

My point is, even if you try to condense those notes, it will take more than 2 hours a transcript. Then you have to memorize them.

Exams here are different and kinda wish they were like some other places where they have 30 a semester. We have fewer exams with more info on each one. I would guess 18 this semester. Some classes run 5 weeks and only have one exam, although the last one in Facial development wasn't bad at all.

The only point I'm trying to make...2 hours is not even going to get you a C.

ok i believe you. anyways, i hope i even get the chance to take these. still have to decide if dentistry is for me and then still have to get accepted. PA interests me, strength and conditioning interests me, and my uncle keeps hagging me to join the business nation which is really tempting (he called me last night to tell me he was watching the Pistons/Lakers Game 5 in Maui with Dave Winfield and Magic Johnson). still have 2 years to decide though.
