Hey guys,

I saw this data from 2004 from some guy named "Mr Reddy" (i would've directly quoted him but I didn't know how to do that in a new thread) but I thought it could be a collective update, and I think it might be important as some of us make our med school decisions. To me, b/c i haven't been to med school yet but have dealt with extreme stress over grades and class rank, etc. -- it seems that Pass/Fail is the best system to encourage 'feel good" vibes esp in med school. However, i've also heard it's really necessary for schools to rank you in quartiles for residency apps? Can someone clarify the pros and cons of each grading system and if a schools has changed their system, can you bold or make the changes to this list?

Funky ones
Columbia (1st year is P/F , 2nd year is H/P/F) - per CalbeE

A lot of schools have changed their curriculum since 2004 so it's probably a good idea to update it. Tulane is Now P/F first 2 years, and H/HP/P/F for the last 2 years. I am not sure what category that would go under with your scheme.

I believe hopkins is pass/fail for the preclinical years.

Emory has used true P/F (no class rank) since 2007.

Baylor College of Medicine is Pass/Fail

and while i think i still remember it:

Vanderbilt is Pass/Pass*/Fail
Wash U in St Louis is P/F first year, and then ABCDF afterwards

Temple is now H/P/F. I could swear there's an AAMC page that has all this information, too.

FYI, these grades are generally going to refer to the preclinical years only. I'm pretty sure rotations are almost always H/HP/P/F or ABCDF.

Thanks for compiling this.

One other piece of info that would be useful for schools that are not purely pass/fail is whether the grades are on a curve, or based on an absolute scale. I'd imagine it would make a difference to the level of stress if everyone could get an Honors, versus only a certain percentage.

There used to be an AAMC page with this info, although the last time I checked it wasn't there...something about taking it down in order to develop a better reporting system.

I agree. I can only speak for my own school, but Temple's H/P/F is based on class performance, not a curve (this has only been the last year or two). Honors is 92 or above, pass is <92 and >70, fail is <70.

UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical school is incorrectly listed in the original post. It is pass/fail only for pre-clinical years

Found this online this year...don't remember how to find it on the website. I think it's pretty current.

No guarantees, though.

Brown is P/F for the first semester and then the H/P/F as described after that.

NEOMED (NEOUCOM) is H/P/F now. Wright State is P/F, but also includes a percentage with most grades. They also have electives in the second year (and beyond?) that are H/P/F.

UT Southwestern is P/F first semester of 1st year and then ABCDF after that.

Columbia is now entirely p/f for the pre-clinicals and H/HP/P/F for the clinicals. Unranked pre-clinicals, unranked clinicals with a grade breakdown of the class provided (so essentially quartiled).

University of Pittsburgh JUST changed their grading system to P/F for the first two years.

Vanderbilt is pass/ fail for pre-clinical years! Honors/ High Pass/ Pass/ Fail for clinical years!

Mayo is also pass/fail unranked for pre-clinical years. We should make an updated list!

University of Kentucky is percent grades and ranked
