So I need some insight what to do. I am currently enrolled in a program at my school called 4+1 for a masters (it allows you to take undergrad classes as masters classes). But, I MUST continue masters program right away after graduation to not be kicked out. Now I plan to apply next cycle ( graduating in spring). Obviously i wont start medical school till the following year. Does it look bad if I am enrolled in graduating school (and obviously wont be done fast enough with the degree before medical school starts ) and applying to medical schools ? Do they really care about the fact I would have to drop out of my current masters program to attend medical school. Also, my school counts my class when i took at as an undergrad for two grades, an undergrad one, and grad one . I would list both of them (which would be sweet since i got A- in it 😀 ) ?

I appreciate anyone's helps 🙂.

Yes, intending to drop out of a grad program is bad. Most med schools require that you finish an degree granting programs before matriculation. Read the policies at the med schools in which you are specifically interested. Ask the specific med schools. You will want a LoR from your grad program too for the apps, in most cases.

I must admit that I'm a little bit confused about your timeline. If you graduate in the Spring of 2011, and you start your applications directly afterwards, you should have time to complete your 1 year MS before entering medical school in 2012. This is exactly what I did, and there was no trouble with the MS vs. med school timelines.

I'll admit, it was a little bit of a nightmare to juggle coursework and a time-pressured thesis with applications and interviews, but it was definitely doable. Just make sure that you take the MCAT before PhD coursework and research have you up to your ears in obligations. Also, it's never a bad idea to take to mentors and professors about your impending medical school applications. That was probably the biggest hurdle for me - I was the only non-PhD student in my PhD courses, and instructors weren't used to interviews conflicting with class time.

And yes, most medical schools will expect you to complete the MS before you matriculate. But, as I said above, I think that is more than managable unless your program is quite different than the usual 5 year BS/MS.

You could avoid applying to med schools that start in June or July. Most start in August and surely you'd be done with a one-year masters by then. Alternatively, only apply to schools that will permit you to defer for a year if there is a chance you won't complete the program on time.

But yes, you must complete it and submit proof that you finished all the requirements.
