Hi i am new to eveyrthing and will be a freshman at UCLA. I decided to do pre-pharmacy. Is there anything wrong with just being a Bio major and taking all reqs etc and then graduating in 3 years/applying to pharmacy school by second yeaR???

Please help and give me some pointers. I would like to be in-state with USC,UCSD or UCSF.

Nothing wrong with Bio as a major. Try to set yourself up so you can take as many of your science pre-reqs as possible before you take the PCAT, and so that you can continue on towards your BS if you dont get admitted to pharmacy school right away. Get some experience in pharmacy and find one or two solid extra-curricular activities that you like and stick with them.

Hi kingroger317,

I go to ucla right now and i'm also pre-pharm. There's nothing wrong with doing that however understand that there's lots of classes you have to take to graduate and for pre-pharm. Some of them overlap while some don't like USC has the most requirements to do. For california schools, they're very competitive and most people who apply have their bachelors and usually take about 4 years to get it. I think if you work really hard while keeping your grades up, extracurricular, etc you should be okie but seriously don't rush. I was in your position before and I realized I'm just going to take it one step at a time. Well if you need to talk some more about pre-pharm or ucla feel free to pm me =).

Assuming you mean "graduating in 3 years" = getting a Bachelor's, I see nothing wrong with that. I did just that--eArned my Bachelor's in Molecular and Cell Biology from UC Berkeley in 3 years

"The average human has an attention span of 7 minutes...that's why when students fall asleep in my class I understand"

The author of that statement has never been to a strip joint and studied attention span of a typical customer. Not that I know anything about strip joints.

graduate in 3 years...then you miss out on 1 year of cheap student football tickets in Pac-10. Something money can't buy..

hahahaha...well u prove a point, i guess in things other than school...that fact has its limitations 😀

To endlesslove, wow congrats for finishing in 3 years! Thats pretty amazing, was it really tough to do? Since Berkeley is on the semester system, how do you like it?

it was hard a few times with 20+ units a semester, 3-4 volunteering activities, research, and a part-time job or 2...i remember 1 semester where i took 20 midterms and finals, 😉 heh...what can i say, i loved the semester system...i don't know how i will adjust to the quarter system starting this fall 🙁 SEMESTER ROCKS.

I agree with Dreamerchick... I just graduated from UCLA, and while there is nothing wrong with being a bio major and taking all the prereqs, take things one step at a time. DO NOT pack all science courses your first quarter because you're still adjusting to the system. I know quite a few people who messed up their first year because they thought they could handle it.
I thought about graduating early at some points during school, but decided not to. See how you like UCLA before you decide to rush into graduating... Personally, I wouldn't give up my four years there for anything, it was just that memorable to me. 🙂

Good luck and have fun! Undergrad will be over in a flash....
