Hi guys,

I'm an M1 student, and class is about to begin.

One problem that I'm facing deals with textbooks. One of my anatomy textbook is "Essential Anatomy Dissector: Following Grant's method". Apparently, my sister, an M3 student, has "Grant's dissector".

The thing is, I want to save as much cash as possible. If Grant's dissector is not very different from Essential Anatomy Dissector, I'm planning to stick with the former.

What should I do?

I didn't use my dissector at all (I had grants). My prof didn't follow it anyway we just looked for things and skinned. If anything, there are always the Umich videos to watch. I wish I never bought the thing.

Just my 2 cents.

OP,

Just use your sisters. I used an old Grant's for the first two days and then never touched it again for the rest of the semester

At my school we followed Grant's almost cut for cut for our disection, and I really liked it as a study aid. Check to see if you are going to be following it and if so I found it helpful. We had some fat covered copies in lab, but I had one for study use and I enjoyed it. Often looking at Netters is TMI so Grant just has the specific structure you want and will have some info on its relations to other structures which I found nice.

Honestly, there are few textbooks that you will actually use. your dissector is one that you will use. Go with the Essential Anatomy Dissector. It may follow Grant's but it isn't Grant's and you want the one that goes with the anatomy text that your using and personally I had to have one of each (undergrad Grant/ med essential) Essential was easier to follow and better diagramming.

You want to save on textbooks - get them from other students in your school (year or 2 ahead of you) or Half.com.

Other good things not to skimp on would be Golijan's pathology text, Baby Robbins, Physiology text & BRS from Costanzo, Neuroanatomy made ridiculously simple, Microbiology made ridiculously simple & First Aide for USMLE (get this before 2nd yr begins by the way).
