Hello, I have my scores and I'm trying to decide whether or not I should retake it. I am aiming to go to UC Davis, but I do not know the how much weight they put on the GRE. I do struggle with verbal...also UC Davis recommends having mid to high 70 percentile and all I need is 2 points in order to be at the average. I am at the average for GPA wise, but I am worried that my quantitative could prevent me from moving further in the application process. Btw I am an instate applicant

Any advice is appreciated!!!
MY scores are
V: 150(45%) Q: 157(68%) AW:4.5(80%)

Retake if you have the time and actually believe you can make a meaningful change in your first scores.

Otherwise, coming from a fellow lower-end-GRE-scorer, I would say just make sure the rest of your application, such as GPA and vet experience, really shines. (BTW, your quant score is pretty good though I'm not sure what weight Davis puts on GRE scores altogether, as I'm not applying there.)

I believe UC Davis only considers the Quantitative section of the GRE.

@neocia thank you for your advice.
@BionicCat yeah I know they only look at Quantitative, but unsure if i should try to increase it.

I believe that UCD puts heavy weight on the statistics end of the application (GPA, GRE scores) in that they filter out any application that doesn't meet a cut off before they look at your PS, extracurrics, ect. However, if your GPA is their average, I'd say it's worth a shot to apply to them! Your GRE score is not that bad. They also really like re-applicants who apply a second time to their school (one of my friends got into the 2018 class after being rejected to the 2017).

In terms of improving your verbal score, the best advice I can give you to tackle the verbal section in two ways: vocab memorization and critical thinking skills. Memorize as many words as you can! I know it's difficult, but somedays I would literally just sit and go through 4-5 stacks of 50 vocab words. Also, go over words you've learned or think you know a few times because it's easy to lose it haha! For the passages, learn how to read the passages well and to take notes on your scratch if necessarily (like what is the main idea of the passage or what does each paragraph talk about). Take LOTS of TIMED practice tests, and push yourself to test your skills. The 3 weeks up to my test, I took a test everyday just so I could get a hang of what type of answers they were looking for.

Haha it was hell, but totally worth it because I ended up getting the score I wanted 🙂 Your stats look good though so just apply with a positive approach, and what is meant to happen, will happen! Best of luck xx

Thank you for your input, I appreciate it! Yeah I just did not have the time to memorize a bunch of vocal before I took it. Good luck to you to if you are applying this cycle! 🙂
