Hello all!! I am starting my pre-req this fall and will be taking classes non-stop until next fall which barely gives me time to study for the GRE (which I should have taken before this fall). This leads me here, anyone recommend a good GRE class that is within reasonable price? I have all the books from princeton to kaplan, but it's so hard to memorize every single english word in the dictionary. Any suggestions?

Memorizing a dictionary isn't going to help you much anyway (since it's a bit impossible) so perhaps you should focus on roots and suffixes? Maybe a little question answer strategy for when you have to (make an educated) guess?

I have the Kaplan book and so far I think it will be a big help for me. A course would probably help too, but it's not in my budget!

i recommend downloading the (FREE!) PowerPrep software from ets (www.ets.org/gre/stupubs). it includes two practice tests set up just like the actual exam. i also used a Kaplan book...nothing too fancy, about $20-$30 at Borders. i found it useful for reviewing the math section and learning some strategies for the verbal section, but didn't really like their practice tests. also, if you ever find yourself wasting time online FreeRice.com is a fun & addictive way to get some vocab practice 🙂

I can recommend the Kaplan course, but it is not cheap. Worth it, but its expensive compared to the books. Good luck!

Slightly unrelated, but related to the mention of PowerPrep. Anyway.

For those of us using macs, what are the best options for practicing taking tests on computers? I scribbled all over my test questions when I took the SAT (crossing out what I know is wrong helps me so much) and am not looking forward to having to jump back and forth between a screen and a piece of paper. So I'd love some practice with the different format. Am I out of luck short of finding a PC I can download PowerPrep to, or are there any sample computer tests out there that are close to the real thing?

Worst case scenario you can use VMWare fusion and partition your hard drive to have a Windows portion on your Mac. You have to pay for windows if you choose to use it, but it allows you to use Windows only programs. I have found it particularly useful at a school that supports nothing but Windows and has given assignments that must be completed using Windows. I don't remember if I payed anything for VMWare fusion.

When I took the GRE back it 2003, I take a prep course. I think I used a Kaplan book. What I really found helpful was writing out the words on notecards, punching a hole through them and threading them through a keyring. That way, I could attach them to my keys and study them on the go. As I learned words, I removed them and over time the stack got smaller. Eventually I learned them all. Also, studying in a group was really helpful.
