Hello,

I am not pre-vet, but I figured the vet forum could help me with this question about the GRE.
I took the GRE to apply to a masters program and I'm confused on how the GRE is score.

Does the total score include the writing score, for example if you got a 150 in quantitative and a 150 in verbal and a 4 on writing is your total score 304?

Thanks!

It seems that the percentile scores are used to compare against other students. I don't think they add the categories together like that (at least I haven't seen that).

I've seen some PhD programs look at combined GRE scores, and I think they combine just verbal and quant. So in your hypothetical case, you'd have a 300, with a AW score of 4.

Generally, a school won't look at a raw score. Those scores you see on the websites of the programs you're applying to might be minimums. ETS recommends that schools use the percentile ranking when considering applicants because that's more informative. The "average" raw score might vary, while the percentile ranking compares you to all the test-takers within that testing period.

If you're looking for programs where there's a minimum raw score (I've seen plenty that do that), the score you see on the page includes the verbal and quantitative as mentioned above.

Generally I will see that schools may put up a minimum raw score (which in your case is a 300) but comparison of applicants is generally used via the actual percentages from each individual sections, and the comparisons are section by section
