Hey guys,

I just took the GRE and got a 590 on the Quant section *wince*. But I got a 660 on verbal. Do you think I've still got a shot at applying to Vet School? *fingers crossed*

I'm really just a words person more than a discrete numbers person....

Well, you got what you got. If the rest of your application (particularly GPA) is solid it's probably not a big deal. Your verbal percentile will be high (in the 90's probably) but your quant percentile will be low, possibly below 50th. At schools that average the percentiles you'll come out around 60-70th which is still decent (though that doesn't include the writing).

How did you study for the quantitative section? Do you think your problem was knowing how to do the math, or how to do it quickly without a calculator?

I think for me the key was reviewing strategies for doing the algebra, geometry, etc. without using a calculator, so that I could work through problems quickly. So I got a GRE study book and worked through all of the math review. It explained how to do the basic math without a calculator. Before reviewing I knew how to do the math but would have needed a calculator to do it quickly.

Depending on the schools you're applying to, you probably still have time to put in a little time and retake it. I agree with the last poster, you have a chance if the rest of your app is solid, but retaking it is worth a shot.

Congrats on that high Verbal score! If you and I took the test together, we'd be unstoppable. My verbal was crap, but Quant was good.

Just my input: I only know about Penn since thats where I applied, but they told me they look at the Quant score more than Verbal. I can vouch for other schools (I know they are not all the same), but if you have time to retake it, go for it. You can also speak to the admissions committee from whatever schools you are interested in and see what they think, too.

Whatever you decide, good luck! 👍

I believe those were my exact scores when I took it, so yes, you have a chance! I did get a 5 on the writing section so that may have helped too. Its up to you, and depends on how strong the rest of your application is.

Hey guys!

Thanks for all the advice, my GPA is somewhat decent (3.36, I'm still bringing it up from a bad sophomore year and logging pretty much straight A's ever since). I have well of a thousand hours of animal and veterinary experience, which I'm hoping is my ace.

As for the quant section, I've always had great difficulty with numbers, I just don't conceptualize them very well. I was able to study through the book I got and understand the basic concepts presented to me, but because I can't glance at a problem and see the numbers in my head I have to write them down, redraw any graphs (which takes way too much time), and then plug and chug. I've just never been and will never be a mathematician, it's not something that comes easily to me.

To whomever said "You got what you got", that's really just my emotions on it. I know I can improve, but I don't have enough time to retake it before applications are due (the whole once in two months thing). So, I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for the best!

Anyone know approx. how long it took to get their Writing scores in the mail?

I don't think that's a bad attitude to have at all, but just fyi for most of the schools if you take it in September you should be fine. (it's once per calendar month 😉 )

If you don't think you could improve your quant score significantly in that little of time though I wouldn't bother.

Wow, I messed up. In my hurry to run out of the testing facility (I wanted OUT!!!!) I got my scores confused. I actually got a:

Quant: 660 so 62%
Verb: 590 so 84%
Analytical: 5.0 so 81%

How's them apples? What are my chances now?

You are definitely within the average range for most schools now in both quant and verbal! I think you got higher than me by 20 points on verbal and the exact same quant score and I got in🙂 The GPA is on the lower side of the majority of applicants but your experience hours will definitely give you a boost. Just make sure you apply to some schools that don't weigh GPA as heavily (aka, not just Davis and Cornell haha).

I burst out laughing irl at that. Haha, no I'm looking at:

Auburn as my stretch school.
Kansas
U of I - my own state school
Wisconsin
and Colorado State (my dream. haha, good luck. x_x)

Also my last 30 hours GPA is around 3.8, last 45 hours is 3.7, so hopefully they look at that.

Time to consume some alcohol
