Found a great blog online written by a Family Doc who owns his own (solo) practice, does OB and pulls in a speciality salary. He offers practical tips on how he does and also insightful political commentary. I found it to be an interesting and fun read. Enjoy!

thanks for sharing! this is more positive than the recent disappointing read over at sermo! 🙁

Disappointing read at sermo?

Thanks for the link. This guy really knows what he's doing.

thread title:
$170,000 per year on avg for FP per Sanjay Gupta......

Those statistics aren't new, and that average has been quoted in multiple income-related threads on SDN over the past 2-3 years. The real issue isn't that we make an average of $170,00/year, but that most specialists make at least twice that.

The fact that every FP isn't making $170,000/year doesn't mean that it isn't accurate. Do these guys understand what an average is?

The Sermo crowd is even whinier than SDN, if you can believe it. I find very little useful discussion taking place there.

Are you ever over there? Did you read that thread? It wasn't the 170 I was bummed about, it was all the docs complaining that they take home less than 100. I believe they were more the solo/private practice. Some plastic surgeons complaining in there. Some docs saying they didn't take a salary to save their business, etc.

I don't know, I think have have some good business plan ideas and savvy enough as well.

Do you think some of these docs are just that incompetent business wise? I would have thought if they were smart enough to seek out Sermo that they might have been smart enough to re-invent their practice.

I am probably okay with being in a more rural area too. Sort of western Midwest...but I guess that would not be Midwest. That would be the Front Range I suppose. I want mountains is all, otherwise I am pretty open from Alaska to NC.

Yep.

I only wish intelligence was a prerequisite to being able to access the Internet, but alas...it's not.

😀

I wonder if some of it is complacency to what they were once used to? Afraid to change things, afraid to stream line their office, afraid to reduce staff...?

Maybe for guys like me just getting out in this environment, maybe we will be better prepared.

I still have a ways to go in residency, but some of the senior residents are so f'ng clueless about what is going on or what their options are. I don't even bother anymore...I they don't "get it" at this point or have no initiative to think unconventional, what ev'

I could be fooling myself or I could end up being well prepared. I think the fact I am at least cognizant of issues and exploring things and reading that I will be more of the latter, ie well prepared.

The only thing that troubles me is the loans. I am not so sure I could jump right into solo private without first doing 3-5 yrs under served with loan repayment and a salary. I wonder if while you are doing this you could sort of start building a solo practice on the side. Do you know if this would typically breach a contract?
