Hello. I would like to attend medical school but I don't know if I can without a green card. I'm currently a freshman at college and will most likely receive my green card in 2015 or so. I went to elementary, middle, and high school here, I don't know if that makes a difference. Does it matter if I have a green card or not to attend med school? Thank you.

umm..pretty sure it does...if u don't..u hv to apply as "international" i guess? green card/permanent resident is looked upon equallly as a citizen.

Many med schools don't accept international students. Some do, but many of those are highly-selective schools. Some expect you to prove you can afford 4 years of med school by putting the tuition and fees into an escrow account before you matriculate. It will improve your odds of an acceptance significantly if you become a permanent resident before you apply.

It definitely matters. I was on a similar boat- I went to high school in the US, but it took 7 years for me to get a GC, so I ultimately didn't get one till the end of my 3rd year in college. I hope yours makes it before the application season! You still have ~2 more years...

Get a GC before you apply if you can. It would make your life much easier and open so many more doors in terms of medical schools that you can apply!

Check out the MSAR. Look at the % of internationals who got accepted each year. The numbers aren't that pretty.

I'm applying this cycle with a green card... however, when I first looked into applying I was not a resident... From what I understand you can still apply as an international student with any study visa so long as you have completed the 90hrs undergrad, however you fall into the ~10% "out of state/other" acceptance allowance so competition is harder. (plus you pay the extortionate international fees too!) Good Luck :luck:
