What is the reason why neonates are so susceptible to it? What is the mechanism?

I always assumed its simply because of the fact that it colonizes the vaginal tract, so it can be easily acquired by a newborn passing through the birth canal. But I guess that wouldn't explain why it causes meningitis all the way till around 6 months.
