Is it normal to feel pretty confident about your job performance during residency and have that feeling validated by your program director to suddenly questioning your skills during your first post-residency job? In my last thread I did share the horror of my current boss. For contractual reasons I've decided to stick it out until then but I've noticed that I'm starting to doubt myself. I'm sure there is a learning curve and it certainly doesn't help that my first job experience involves a horrible boss. But is what I'm feeling normal?

It is. You've been institutionalized the past 4+years and now you're relying on your own abilities and intuition for the care of others. This is a normal process. This too shall pass. 🙂 It's important to make friends with other clinicians near you and stay in contact with former classmates/residents - they can be invaluable help while you're making this transition and likely others are feeling the same sense of dread as you are.

Stick with the job, as each year passes your abilities and confidence will grow too. This is a good learning experience and keep attending conferences.
