GS internship before IM?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If I were to do a GS surgery internship before an IM residency, what effects would that have on me getting into an IM residency?
Hmm. Well, the effect would depend on a lot of things: why you did a surgery internship, why you then chose to do IM, your relationship with your surgery program (i.e. did you do a prelim surgery year, or did you match to categorical GS and left after a year), what period of time elapsed between your surgery year and your medicine residency...

Doing a surgery internship on purpose, knowing you then planned to go into IM, certainly wouldn't help you get an IM spot, if that's what you're asking. And you'd get minimal, if any, credit for your time in surgery - you could expect to do an entire 2nd internship (or at least 3/4 of one). If you know you want to do IM, just apply for IM.

DP:

I'll assume here that I know WHY you are asking the question (although correct me if I'm wrong).

Doing a surgical internship will not help you with your future career plans. Most surgical interns are not operating much nor are they really obtaining high level surgical skills. You might get some benefit over your colleagues in IM when doing procedures but its a really painful way to do so when a lot of surgical internship is floor/scut work.

What you need to do, MANY years from now when the time comes, is to decide between interventional cardiology or cardiothoracic surgery. Do you want to be a surgeon or a proceduralist?

Don't do a surgical intern year because you think it will help you in being an interventional cardiologist...those few skills you pick up that intern year will be lost by the time you get to your fellowship in IC.
