I did a search but couldn't find anything. So what is the average mcat and gpa of accepted students? Also is a georgetown a good medical school? What are its pros and cons? Thank you!

I can't believe I am doing this...but wikipedia does seem to have accurate info for the most recent class. The class avg. science GPA was a 3.66 and the avg MCAT was a 31.9. Both of these stats are substantiated by the article referenced. As for the overall avg. GPA being a 3.75, I'm not sure where they got that number. But if I remember correctly from orientation, the avg. overall GPA was higher than the science GPA, so a 3.75 is not unlikely.

Here you can look over the past years match lists, including the most recent 2009 match. **I forgot to add that 4th years averaged a 224 on the USMLE Step 1, and the rumor around campus is that the current 3rd years averaged a 227 on Step 1.**

As you can tell, I'm a student at Georgetown, so I will be a bit biased in my assessment of the school. I love it here, but you should ask others on this board their opinions. To keep it short I will give you the top pros and cons for Georgetown.

Pros:
-Its location in Washington, DC (which I feel is one of the greatest cities in america)
-Its proximity to NIH (the mecca of biomedical research)
-The Halo effect (the reputation and fame of the undergrad school rub off on the school of medicine)

Cons:
-Price ($$$$)
-Facilities (are little dingy, but they are trying to make them as nice as possible)

Also bear in mind that Georgetown has a VERY LARGE amount of applications each year, and they look closely at their essay to discern actual interest from just another school in a broad application.

thank you both for the information.. very helpful! Is this considered a top medical school and is it pretty prestigious?

It's ranked in the Top 50 according to the U.S. News. But in answer to your question, yes Georgetown is a prestigious medical school.

Interesting, I've gotten the feeling throughout this cycle that Georgetown's name brand makes us for some relative shortcomings when it comes to the school of medicine. I've heard time and time again that top applicants use the Gtown interview as practice and a backup. The large proportion of people in the class who come off the wait list must also be taken into consideration.

Well no one ever said that Georgetown's School of Medicine is a top-top medical school. A top 20 medical school will offer you more research and extracurricular opportunities than Georgetown's school of medicine, that's obvious. Top applicants probably do use their interview as a practice run, and I would do the same if I was in their shoes and hoping for an acceptance to a top 20 medical school. But in the grand scheme of things, Georgetown's school of medicine is still a prestigious medical school. It pulls in a surprising amount of research dollars (~190 million when including affiliated hospitals), it is affiliated with the largest medical center in DC (Washington Hospital Center), and it is probably the most highly regarded academic medical center in DC.

Georgetown's school of medicine is currently ranked 40th in the nation and is in the process of a revitalization following years of financial troubles at the hospital and medical center. The Hospital and Medical Center are doing better financially than they have in a very long time, and profits and research dollars are up thanks to new faculty and administration. I would bet that our ranking increases in the next few years because of this revitalization (it already has, moving from 46 to 44 to 40 over the last couple of years).

I agree - I'll bet this'll be bolstered by the troubles that GW is having (probation).

so what is considered a plus or special about Washington, dc itself??

I know this will sound ridiculous, but I am just waiting for the day that Gtown accepts me into their med school so that I can reject their **s. Why am I so bitter? They didnt accept me for undergrad, AFTER interviewing me for a spot in the undergrad class AFTER I spent tons of money trying to curry favor with the interviewer, etc. Whatever, I'll show them when they accept me. Oh that is going to be a very satisfying day. "Sorry...but I would rather go to a much more prestigious school. It was nice touring your mediocre facilities..." No offense, though. Its just an irrational grudge that I have haha

Pros:
* Georgetown is a lovely place to live.
* The students (at least the undergraduate students) know how to dress.

One con is that housing in the area is extraordinarily expensive. Especially for poor med students!

Agreed. It is a con about the school I suppose. But many people manage to pay around $1000 if they live in a house with other students. I'm lucky and live with my girlfriend, splitting the costs (700 a month). But you have to remember that you are living in one of the nicest areas in DC (low crime rate, wealthy residents, nice parks and green areas).

I have friends who pay $800-900 by living in Columbia Heights. The area is definitely an up-and-coming neighborhood, so patches of it are a bit sketch, but many apartment complexes are in the nicer parts.

Somewhat of a long walk to the metro from G'town, if I'm not mistaken. Supposedly the city of G'town didn't want the metro ruining their fancy smancy shopping district. That's the the opinion I got from a friend who lives in D.C., so that story may not have any truth to it. The area of D.C. that it's in is amazing though. Lots of nice restaurants, and very safe from what I remember.
