Guage vs French

This has always confused me. I realize that a higher gauge equals a smaller diameter and the higher French equals a larger diameter. Anyone have a conversion chart between the two? What is the gauge/French of the Cordis introducer and the MAC? Can't seem to get a straight answer anywhere. Thanks.

Gauge refers to diameter ....18 gauge 1/18th of an inch.

French refers to circumference....8 French...8 mm circumference


My units maybe incorrect, but that is the difference between gauge and french.

What MMD said, so French divided by Pi gives diameter in mm.

Isn't it the amount of needles that fit in a 1cm diameter circle (meaning you can fit 18 18g needles in a circle of 1 cm in diameter?)

The French catheter scale is commonly used to measure the outside circumference of cylindrical medical instruments including catheters. On the French system, the diameter of the catheter can be determined by dividing the French size by pi, thus an increasing French size corresponds with a larger diameter catheter.( from wikipedia)
