Hi SDN!
I am a first semester freshman studying Bioengineering at a Big 10 state school. I really would like to have a strong application by the time I am applying to medical school. I want to stay near Chicago and as such Feinberg or Pritzker would be my absolute goals. Obviously the process is nowhere near as simple as do x,y,z and get gpa x.xx and mcat yyy to get into these schools, but I would like to try to be competitive for them.
Last semester I got a 3.75 (B in calc III) and my goal for by the time I apply would be a 3.85 or 3.90. This semester I started clinical volunteering once a week for three hours, and I am in a lab researching liver cell engineering 8 hours a week. I plan on continuing both of these all 4 years and if I do I will likely be listed in a publication (although not 1st author). I also am a member of the musical production student organization on campus, and I am head lighting designer for this semesters show.
Are there other things I should add. I am very interested in teaching and I may be TAing a class next semester, so besides that.
One unique thing about me that may help my application is that I have a rare liver disease (chronic but I am doing well as of now) and have been treated through Northwestern for all of my life and I am likely going to shadow my physicians there this summer. It was my first real exposure to medicine and it is how I learned I love learning about medicine and I draw on those experiences and emotions when I interact with patients in volunteering, because it is hard to be a patient and if you don't know whats happening it is scary.
Thank you for reading my post. I really have tried to do as much research as I can on my own, but hearing some guidance would be highly appreciated
