OK, here's the deal...I'm very competitive, but also quite nice and very quiet. I got my final grade in physics and it was lowered by 4pts. by a TA grade recording error. However, the error didn't change my letter grade. I e-mailed my prof. and he basically didn't do anything about it. So, I asked him about the grade at the end of class today and pretty much got very pissed off because he kept saying he didn't understand why I was upset, because it didn't change my grade (this happened in front of about 8 people in the class). This TA has made errors with everyone's homework, etc. all semester. I tried to say that it was the principal that the TA took away 4pts. I earned and maybe next semester it will cost me my A, but he doesn't understand. Do you guys think I overreacted? Should I just drink my wonderful beer and forget about it (fat chance)? Oh yeah, my undergrad GPA from 10yrs ago sucks...so I have no margin of error.

Give it up gunner:laugh:

Seriously, I would tell the prof so he knows that the TA needs to improve her math before she affects someone's grade, but seeing that it didn't affect your grade I really wouldn't worry about it. Try not to get that TA again and make sure you give her a poor evaluation.

Yes. you did. A very gunner-like behavior. As pointed out in a post long ago, a gunner would whine about every single point they can get back, even if it has no bearing on the final grade.

yeah if it doesnt change your final grade....its not surprising the prof got annoyed like that. forget the LOR from that guy.

so the ta is bad. nothing you can really do since the school needs people to run the discussion and lab sections.
now if it had an effect on someone's grades then they would have addressed it....other than that...just let it go.

don't expect to get any good LoRs from that class. Just hope that that prof isn't friendly with other profs you might want to get LoR's from.

Guess that makes me a gunner🙁 ... my prof forgot to give me 10 points on an exam, and I caught it, but though it improved my test average by a whole letter, it only increased my overall average by 1 point. He didn't make a big deal over it, he seemed pretty annoyed that he'd missed something like that.

I went through the same situation, but since it didn't affect my overall grade, it was pointless to argue. My theory: Don't sweat the insignificant. Bad TA's come and go, getting a 'good' TA has some luck involved.

Enjoy your beer and have another on me!

How will it cost you your A next semester? You're obviously checking every point to make sure you got credit for everything. If the same mistakes get made next semester, you ask for a regrade again and if it makes a difference, it'll be fixed. I don't see your argument.

I don't want to be a gunner. I want to be an artillery man. You know, the guy that puts the really large shells into those anti-aircraft cannons in WWII footage. That job looks fun.

Actually, I wasn't checking any points...for anything. My prof calculated our grades in front of us and he pointed out that I had a zero on a quiz. There was a quiz that should have been 10pts. that was marked as 0pts. The quizes are 20pts of our final grade...ended up being 4pts off my final grade. That's almost half a letter grade, I'm lucky it didn't change the grade. Also, there were points lost on homeworks from misgrading that I didn't do anything about. Oh well, I don't want to be a gunner...but then if you had my GPA you'd probably be a little overprotective of your points too. I've been told I need to get around a 34 on the MCAT to get consideration...guess I'm a little uptight. 🙁

I'm confused why you'd care. Don't just dink your beer, chug it and a few others. Then follow it with some shots. Forget the f*cking points and get hammered.

This is obviously troll bait. If you are serious, you need some serious help.

said like a tru cubs fan

I had a similar thing happen to me today. My physiology lab TA had counted me absent for a day that I was at an interview earlier in the semester, even though she told me it would be ok to make it up in another section, which I did. The lab absence lowered my final grade one point (from an A to a lower A), and I was about to e-mail my prof and complain, but then decided that I am a complete ***** for even contemplating such an idea.
Anyway, I need to go cheer for my gators. Looks like they are going to be #1 for all of one week . . . again.

I once had a prof forget to give me a whole page of an exam. I had to take it early in his office so I had no clue that it was missing a page. It was one-quarter of the test so I got a D. I mentioned it to him and he gave me 100% for the page, which brought me up to an A-. Sometimes you get lucky.

Yeah, if it doesnt affect your grade it doesnt matter.

I dont understand how it affects things next semester.

If at any point it DID effect your grade (ie A or A-, B+ or B, etc) then that would be completely 100% underestandable and justified. Even complaining if you dont know how it will affect your grade is good, since it might affect your grade. But if you know that it wont affect your grade, and they confirm this, then I dont see a problem really.

besides, it's all about what you learn, not what score you get. lol

Interesting theory. Hmmmmm . . . do the people in charge know about this??

It's happened to me a number of times in classes. At first I would get annoyed by it, but I just let it slide. Most profs will act weird if you show that you are concerned over a few measly points. I only point out the error if it is a signnificant error. If it is only a a couple points mistake, I let it ride.

When I do approach them, I normally start out by saying, "Could you tell me what the right answer is to this problem?" or "I'm not sure this has been added up correctly", etc. Then I wait and see how the prof reacts to the mistake. If he/she starts joking about it, I let it go. Normally if they want to fix it, they will fix it without even asking.

FYI, most profs at my school call people like us "grade grubbers"

in my opinion, the term grade grubbers should only be applied to people who either ask for a higher grade for no reason, or point out mistakes that don't change the grade. when something affects your grade, or if the final grade is not yet determined, people should be able to ask for a correction if an error has been made. i don't think this is grade grubbing, but more like helping out an incompetent biology TA who can't even add correctly.

Do you think its gunner when you're taking a Biochem final, and you finish the 3 hr exam in 20 minutes, walk up to the front of the class, slap your exam book on the table, look the Prof straight in the face and remark "Done, its all correct, dont'e bother grading it" and then proceed to march out??

Also, do you think it would be a good idea to ask for a LOR from this said Professor?

in this case tho...it seems to be ok because you didnt know at the time how it would affect the overall grade....

you just know at that instant hey i can get a letter grade higher.
i think anything that helps you go from B to A is something all of us will go up and try to get corrected.

so not gunner yet. 😀

i think the prof be glad that he doesnt have to grade a test. tho usually he just passes on most of the workload to the TAs anyway...

In one of my classes on the last day of class I brought in a quiz that was graded lower than it should have been, but the professor was lazy and didnt correct it. He did however say that if it effected my letter grade for the class he would bump my grade up. I was fine with that.... Assuming that he is honest about it.

The grade isn't completely determined yet, but it shouldn't be in danger. I think I was just really stressed out yesterday...had my first lab practical final ever 5hrs after my second night shift at my new job...with no sleep in between. My prof. wasn't really upset with me, just confused. I think I'll get cable...all I've been doing since I decided to go pre-med is study every second...SDN surfing is entertaining, but I think I need some Comedy Central. 🙂

Oh, during my engineering career my peformance reviews always said I was laid back and needed to be more assertive. Guess this is what happens when your future depends on some numbers you produced over 10yrs ago and you have one shot at fixing them. But, no worries...

I wrote a paper on the possible reemergence of West Nile Virus for a parasit class in 1997. The prof gave me a "C" because he thought WNV was a rare tropical disease and that I was being ridiculous. Last year I sent him a copy of a MMWR West Nile Update and a request for a grade ammendment and apology.

No, I didn't really think it would happen, but I was in an interesting mood that day.

I like to do the best I can and some people think I am a gunner. For organic chemistry my final grade was 510 pts as added by the professor. That gave me an A- However, when I totaled my points I had 515pts. I showed this to the prof and he said I was right. He apologized and told me that the extra 5 points gave me an A in the class.😀

It was the only time in school where points ever mattered. 😉

Like one poster stated I too had a small margin of error to work with.
