So I'm applying to a lot of schools in the top 20 and I was looking for some insight from some med students in the top institutions about the dynamics of their class. I am a pretty laid back guy and I can't really stand people whose sole purposes in life are grades and career advancement. This is not to say I lack any ambition or motivation, I am just looking for an environment that is more about developing into a good doctor and less about "getting to the top of the class." While I understand that the nature of the institutions I'm applying to will attract some people who may be classified as "gunners", what is the overall feel of the student body at your school? Are there mostly bookworks and labrats? Have people had more social interactions than checking books out from the library? Any insight would be appreciated.
PS: I cannot believe how many "Will I finally get laid in med school?" threads are on this forum.

"A) Gunners- Every american medical school has gunners. Furthermore, your interview process will not allow you to prove or disprove my theory, as these people generally aren't doing interviews. Also don't let anyone tell you that theres no competition at their school because there is always someone who wants to do ortho at the hosp for special surgery, even at DO schools.

Moreover if you are really worried about dodging the "Gunners" then 90% chance that you are one....my observational experience"

If you're worried about gunners, go to a P/F state school. It'll be a lot more fun, I promise.

Also, I can't believe that either. If someone hasn't bumped uglies before med school, chances are they probably won't succeed with a bunch of neurotic women that have no free time.

From word on the street, UC Davis is super laid back, fun, and chill.
UCLA is the opposite--pretty stressful, people aren't as happy. I am not saying that they are miserable, but there are tons of crazy and neurotic and uptight med students here...

UCLA's *not* stressful. Not sure what made you feel this way (maybe the undergrad sciences there?) but it's incredibly relaxed.

2 easy steps to defeating gunners:

1. Go to a p/f school
2. Don't talk to the gunners, especially around exam time

And just because somebody's a gunner doesn't mean they'll out-perform you on exams. There are a lot of gunners out there who do it because they're insecure about their abilities.

I would say half of those threads are trolling, and the other half are entirely serious...it's really not that suprising though.

If you're aware of "misc" then I'm pretty sure a considerable amount of Forever Alone Virgins come from that population.

...but seriously guys, will i get laid in medical school?

It's summer. They've looked up from their books and realized that women are wearing a lot less clothes than they were four months ago. They're also confused why the girl they didn't notice in a sweater is suddenly ignoring them in a sun dress.

Every school is going to have it's "gunners," however you define the term. Every school will also have people more like yourself. This isn't something you can try to pick, and the "feel" of a class will vary from year to year at any given institution. Sure, MAYBE the top 20 will have a few more of these people, but that doesn't mean that your lower ranked schools won't.

In other words, good luck trying to stay away from any particular person.
