By gunners you mean people that will stop at nothing to get the best grades possible right?

I usually define gunners as any student who's competitive to the point of malignancy. It can be deliberate, subtle, passive, active, whatever. Everyone has their own definition. And yeah, dental school isn't immune to them.

I think that "gunners" are more prevalent in schools where specializing is a popular path. The combination of that with a ranking system often leads to some pretty cutthroat competition (so I've heard). I've asked this question at every dental school I interviewed at, and it seemed like it existed to some extent at every school, but that students often learn quickly that this is not an effective method for success. It sounded like at every school, there are more people who are willing to help you than not, although there are the few exceptions at EVERY school unfortunately.

Most of our graduates do not specialize but we still have some ugly gunners. But most people help each other or at least their friends out, however some just don't get that too much brown-nosing & lying in your face can be detrimental to their reputation.

You bet there are. Tufts is pretty good about it, though. The number of gunners at our school is dwarfed by the number of easy going colleagues willing to help out.

By gunner, I'm talking people who will complain about too many good grades being handed out, and keeping their "special stash" of help for themselves. Gunner does not entail those students who work hard and try to ace every class, but at the same time being nonmaleficent and benevolent.

I am wondering if KMF had to do any gunning himself to get into Harvard!

Just kidding buddy
