H-NMR Question

Hey guys,

I had this question on Achiever that asked about proton NMR. In the answer key, it basically says that the ring protons of p-xylene would appear as singlet even though they do have neighbors. Why is that? I don't think I quite understand its explanation. 😕😕😕

Protons will only couple to other protons that are different from them.

In p-xylene, all of the ring protons are in the identical environment, making them magnetically equivalent. Thus, not being able to couple to split the signal.

P-xylene has symmetry. Symmetrical protons are considered equivalent and they do not split. Hope this helps. Good luck.
