Hey guys. Is anyone else concerned of an H1N1 outbreak at their college? I am. I keep thinking that if I get it and am down for 5 days it will mess up my GPA.

So far I have been not touching any door-knobs and have been washing my hands a bunch. But between public transportation and school I feel it is bound to strike. I know it is really not worse than the regular flue, but still.

Anyone else with me?

EDIT: I know I will need to deal with this when I am a doc, but I'm not really worried about being sick. I am worried about missing school.

Get the vaccine. Its available in October. I don't see how your professors wouldn't excuse your absence if you were confirmed with h1n1...so I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm getting the vaccine the second it becomes available (and I usually forego flu vaccines). In the meantime I'm trying to stay away from the hospital.

That sounds good. Are you guys gonna get the normal one too?

I'm not. I'm pretty sure I already had H1N1 in August. Whatever. It was just a bad flu that knocked me out for about 2 weeks.

I do kind of wanna wear a mask to school anyways though, just for fun.

somebody just told me that 500 people have it at colorado state

You should probably know that the greatest risk of transmission of this flu occurs through airborne particles, and not through virus particles picked up from a door knob.

Get the vaccine and live your life. You cannot make anything better by worrying. Wash your hands, don't kiss the coughing kids and drink your OJ.

At my hospital orientation the other day they said the greatest risk was from people touching infected items. But she could have been wrong.

I think it partially depends on the climate.

yeah i reeaally dont want to get sick either 🙁
washing hands and avoiding those darned sick people who are still coming to school:diebanana:

Vaccines not initially available to students though.

You'd think the sick people would have the decency to at least cover their mouths when they cough. Some girl at school sitting close by was coughing every 30 seconds and never covered her mouth. So incredibly annoying! 😡

Obviously it is initially available to highest-risk. As a future doctor you should be all for that. Elderly, asthmatics, health-care providers, etc. need the vaccine more than healthy college kids with immune systems that have been trained to work their way through weekly (daily?) hangovers and all-nighters. 😉

Students will come soon enough, there really is no sense in worrying.

Don't forget the pregnant people!

(Sorry I'm going to be an uncle in May and had to throw that in 😛)

You're so right! I want to do neonate, how could I forget the moms and babies!? 👍

really? I mean, I highly doubt being down for 5 days would be enough to mess up anyone's GPA unless those 5 days were during final exams week and you were so sick that you couldn't possibly function during the exams.

I would worry about getting it because you feel pretty lousy for a week. I got it a couple of weeks ago and it was such an uncomfortable illness

That's true. Tests could probably be made up with a doc's note. Especially if a lot of people at the school have it. However, there are always those professors that would not excuse you even if the world was ending. I was basically thinking being out for five days could mean as much as - one letter grade. Were on a quarter systems so stuff moves pretty fast.

Yes, it's like a trap in this school so many people are getting sick, swine flu or not. I can't get sick, then I'd have a six hour drive home and a load of school work to make up. What I've been doing is drinking oj everyday, using hand sanitizer whenever I can, and keeping my hands from my mouth. So far it's worked for me, knock on wood.

Last week or two, about 50% of my classmates were sick. I am now starting to get a little sick. It's really pissing me off.

This is not worth worrying about. You're not going to be able to be 100% all of the time, you're going to have to make up for somehow.

Sports teams sometimes have big injuries and still are able to do well. Things don't always go as planned. Don't waste your time worrying about how they may not do so.

So I started this thread at the beginning of the school year. Now, with finals a couple days a way, I am pretty sure I have the swine flue. Fever, sore throat, etc.

I am supposed to be studying right now but I don't think I can muster the strength. THIS SUCKS!

I had it earlier in the semester, and it sucked but really wasn't as bad as everyone made it out to be. I slept for a few days and then was feeling more or less better. It's different for everyone though. Some of my friends took forever to get better.

Half my biochem class caught it about the same time

I had this (or just the normal flu) for about 2 weeks early on this semester.

I just went to class anyways. It was almost hard to take notes because I had to cough (pretty intense coughs) every 20 seconds or so.

Wasn't too bad although It probably did hurt my grades a little

I thought I was coming down with something yesterday, but my body was like NOPE, GOTCHA!
