Just got an emergency text health alert from the University of DE. They have 4 confirmed and 4 probable cases of the H1N1 flu virus in current UD students. Anyone else getting messages from their school?
I don't go to or work at either of these schools, but Loyala in Chicago has a student that was a confirmed case and University of Chicago hospitals has 2 employees that are probably cases.
Scary.
I work at the Northwestern University medical school.
Ya, OSU is sending students e-mail updates regarding cases being treated at the OSU hospital...so far, there is a grand total of one case, and it's still technically a "probable", I believe. Just enough for the evening news to declare "PANDEMIC PHASE FIVE!!!1!!eleventy!!" every three minutes.
I'm not in school right now, but the owner of our clinic made an announcement to us about not coming to work if we feel at all flu like and to go get tested. There were some confirmed cases in our area of Chicago just a few miles from our clinic.

I take a class at Loyola in chicago, and we were told it was most likely not. But you never know?
Did you go to NU or work at the med school now?
We've only got the two cases so far in Kansas, but they're not very far from K-State. The school has already sent out emails about it and have several press releases available. And I've talked about it in nearly every class this week.
One of the researchers from the KSUCVM did some stuff up in Canada at a BSL-4 lab and they did find out that the current swine influenza A viruses are from the 1918 variant with some extra fun stuff thrown in. (You can read more about that here: http://www.k-state.edu/media/newsreleases/april09/swineflu43009.html)
I am glad that WHO is going to stop using "swine flu" because it's hurt the pork industry so much. And you can't even get the damn disease from eating pork!
Ugh, I just don't think it's the BFD that the media is turning it into. Seriously, handwashing + medical advances made since 1918 (there's been a few) = better chances of survival.
