Guys I have listed some hand instruments that I might need to practise for bench test is there anything else I would need?
1.Mouth Mirror
2.Explorer
3.Periodontal probe
4.Cotton pliers
5.GMT
6.Hatchetts and Hoes
Anytrhing else?

Another question do you ask the dentist you work for like several LORs or just one and make photocopies.i am not sure he will give that many for all the colleges i will apply for.

As far as I have seen, instruments are your choice in most of schools and you can actually use what instruments you are comfortable with in different preparations. Nobody is going to ask you about hand instruments. Although some schools like USC ask not to use matrix band in bench exam but otherwise it is upto you.

If you make several LORs with the school's name to whom it is adressed printed inside the letter, it is always better but it does not have to be like that. You can ask the recommender to make a common draft and make several copies of it and sign them. But photocopying and sending will not be acceptable in most of the schools.Any other views?

thanks

I agree about LORs. Photocopies will not be acceptable at most places.

As far as instruments are concerned, think you may not need much else.
Although at UCSF and Pacific, you have to use what instruments they provide.

Yes, UCSF and UOP provide you with their own set of instruments and UOP even provides the booklet with all sorts of preparations that they are going to ask and the steps with the pictures to make it easy for them and for the students to be aware of their expectations. UOP also provides the models of all preparations during the exam which infact can be bought from their bookstore earlier itself to get an idea of what sort of preparations they are looking for.

But again, UOp provides a full set of instruments out of which you can use whatever you wish to- nobody forces you. At UCSF, usually they provide you with only the required instruments and no extras.

USC issues a list of instruments couple of weeks before the bench exams that you should buy BUT again you can buy whatever you feel comfortable with for your prepartion and not the whole list of instruments as most of these instruments are to be used in the books only

At ucsf they gave us green color wax strips...I used it for measuring the occlusal clearance, though I don't know I did it right or wrong but I'm wondering why they gave us those🙄...and how can we use these in our crown cutting?

Another question,is slow speed shd be used for finishing the crown preparation or high speed is sufficient?

With slow speed, you get a really nice, smooth finish. The difference is pretty obvious. You can finish with high speed using fine diamond burs but in UCSF, you have to use what instruments and burs they give you. So slow speed it is.

As for the wax, it is used to measure occlusal clearance- see if you have reduced enough or not.

thnx lafea for clearing my doubt.

It means that the wax they have provided is 1mm or ?.. in thickness, and we have to pass that in between occlussal surfaces to check either sufficient amount is reduced or not?...am i right🙄

I guess there is more than 1 way to do it. I learned it a different way. Easier to show it than explain. 😳
