Has anyone had or know of an organization abroad that offers hands-on experience with primates? I only found one so far (vervet monkey sanctuary). Thanks! 😀

I've found a lot of primate-related experience, but most of it is research oriented, where you'd be a researchers b*tch the entire time. Try googling something like "capuchin + research assistant + costa rica" or something and you'll find tons of stuff, if you look hard enough. But again, lots of the stuff I've found is more research oriented (ex. behaviour) as opposed to veterinary/rehab related.

ETA:
There are lots of orangutan sanctuaries in Indo, but many of them ask for something like 2000 pounds to volounteer and a 24 month wait list or some crap.

I volunteered at the Duke Lemur Center and they have internship opportunities to work with the prosimians. http://lemur.duke.edu/volunteers/intership-application/

I don't know if it would be as hands on as you wanted, but it is an awesome facility. I believe they have a vet internship but I might be mistaken.

There was something that a classmate of mine was looking into somewhere in Africa (could be mistaken about local, she was looking at a lot of different exotic animal experiences), but I am pretty sure you had to pay them to go there, plus airfare, etc. I can look into it if you want.

There is a baboon rescue in South Africa, it's called the Centre for Animal Rehabilitation and Education. 1 month minimum volunteer opp., you do have to pay for the whole thing, plus airfare. If I remember correctly, their website is primatecare.org.za
HTH 🙂

That's great! I didn't think I would find anymore primate organizations that are hands-on. I am looking into all of those suggestions. Thanks everyone 🙂

This is the one she was looking at! Thanks for posting that link.

You're welcome. I was actually planning on going there, had almost everything ready and it fell through at the last minute. It looks amazing though! Good luck 2016DVM
