how does umdnj compare to other schools, besides its being in a not-so-popular city such as newark? what's the general perception of its academic reputation? has it been hard to get into?

That's one of the schools that has been rarely spoken of on SDN, so it'll be interesting what people have to say about it. I know a lot about some schools, quite a bit about most schools, and nothing about a few schools.

That is one of those schools I know nothing about -- but I'm eager to learn!

Well, it's a state school... And it's the only dental school in the State of New Jersey.

It can be relatively difficult for out-of-staters to get in... I have average GPA (a bit above 3) and good DAT scores (21/24) and I didn't even rate an interview when I applied in 1996 because I'm out-of-state.

The Official Acceptances thread for this year shows one New Jerseyite and two New Yorkers accepted to UMDNJ... But the two New Yorkers both have kick-ass stats.. 😛

UMDNJ is like a family environment...very nice people
Excellent clinically
A new building that should be ready sometime in 2004.
Letter grading
Perhaps it's easier now to get in than it was in 1996....because now an out-of-stater can become an in-state resident before matriculating and pay in-state tuition for all 4 years. This must be a relatively new policy.
Everything you need you'll get on a cd and you'll get a laptop.
No textbooks.
Help is definitely available.

The area is not nice....there's no campus housing...have to get an apt somewhere else.
You have to wear the same color scrubs everyday for 4 years.

The average GPA is 3.34
not sure about DAT.
Definitely worth applying to.

since UMDNJ prefers state residents how do they feel about students from NYC, would they consider NYC residents just the way they consider NJ residents; Or is it strictly Jersey residents they prefer. Hope not, it's the top of my list so far 2nd. Stonybrook and then UB.

UBTOM if I drive through the Holland tunnel and get a Jersey Drivers liceanse that would probably make me a state resident.
I assume.

how? thanks

An interesting thought, how do they consider NY residents? I guess they are easing on their policy, so NY residents can cross the bridge?

Not that hard to get in. I have known several people from CA who got in.

The only thing I know about it is that they have good histo website. I use it to test myself b4 every histo test.

to Tink:

I have a feeling your few friends who got in have very good stats.

This is straight from the UMDNJ website http://dentalschool.umdnj.edu/students/prospective/admissions.htm :

ADMISSIONS POLICY As a state-supported institution, the UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School is committed to meeting the dental manpower needs in New Jersey. About 80 percent of the current students are residents of New Jersey.

20% out-of-staters.. I wouldn't say it's THAT easy to get in if you are an out-of-stater. 😛

We New Yorkers don't get any special treatment, but we do make up the bulk of out-of-state applications for UMDNJ because we are right across the river. So all of you from the other 48 states have a pretty big group competing against you for a limited number of seats.

Bottom line: apply if you are out-of-state, but don't pin all your hopes on getting in there, especially if your stats are only respectable and not brain-busting.

I heard on the news last year that UMDMJ was thinking or was in the process of merging w/ Rutgers or whatever university that is nearby (forget the name). Anybody know where they're goin w/ this?
