So, bad news. I just spoke to the AOA. An application has been submitted for a new Touro branch, but that's it. Definitely no apps this year. My question is, why does there need to be another school in the Phoenix area, when there are large geographic parts of the country that have barely an medical schools at all, much less DO?

Is the new touro branch planned for Phoenix or Harlem? 😕 BTW, I have heard Arizona has a physician shortage.

sorry. there's a branch of KCOM opening in Mesa, AZ.

They should be considering opening more in the Northwest... maybe around Seattle or something... I don't think there are any up there :scared:

To answer your question: because Phoenix is a warm weather city where another DO school can make some $$$.

I have a question: why doesn't the AOA mandate that new schools (and branch schools) supprt residencies in addition to the school? Yes, it would likely cut down on the number of schools being built, but it would help ensure osteopathic viability where little currently exists. There's a reason Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania are so DO friendly: they have solid residency programs that draw prospective physicians to those states.

Anyways, I just wanted to chime in here. It's sort of an unoffical SDN rule that any threads pertaining to new DO schools may be threadjacked for complaining-about-lack-of-residency purposes. 😉

touro NV is opening up new residencies in LV. they are opening a derm, ophtho, internal med, er, and in the works is ortho also. they are also opening up a bunch of fellowships.

well, i disovered the difference between AZCOM and this new school. The new school will be a state school, I believe. Still, I wish it was in a different city, to give more variety of locations. I love the idea of being a DO, but it's also hard to move families to some of the places that the schools are located.

The new med school being built in phoenix is an MD school. There's no way the state of Arizona would foot the bill for a DO school. Look how long it took them to allocate funds for this one.

In fact, you are mistaken. Also, it's specifically Mesa, not Phoenix, if that makes a difference (I know they're close). Now I could be wrong about the state school stuff, but that was my impression. I'll research it further.

(Chicago, IL) – The American Osteopathic Association’s Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (AOA COCA) took the following actions at its December 2005 meeting:

Initial pre-accreditation was granted to the following developing colleges of osteopathic medicine:

A.T. Still University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine-Mesa (Ariz.)
Lincoln Memorial University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harrogate, Tenn.

Yeah… uh… I'm in fact not mistaken. There's 2 new med schools being built in AZ. UofA is expanding their phoenix clinical rotation site into a branch campus because they were finally given funding by the state to do so. This new school will be built on the TGen site. This will be a separately named, run, and eventually accredited state supported MD medical school.

KCOM has been slowly developing their clinical rotation site in mesa and will be building a branch campus there. This will be a private DO medical school. When I say slowly developing, I mean they've had this thing in the works for years.

As for new state supported DO schools, I think the only way we're going to see those is in states that don't already have a school. No way would it ever happen in AZ. I think even if the state had the option of taking over MWU or KCOM they wouldn't go for it. AZ is just too saturated in MD tradition to allow that kind of thing to happen. I went to the DO day at the capital last year and most of the representatives and senators didn't know MWU even existed.

right, but previously you mentioned only one school was being built, which was incorrect. That makes sense about the private issue. However, it still irks me to have 2 DO schools within 30 minutes of each other, and only one in the entire northwest (Yakima-2008).
