With the flood of 'should I apply?' posts I was curious of what the harm is in just going-for-it and applying? Other than the expense of it, is there really much else to lose?

If you don't get in, then you can go through the pain of re-preparing for the MCAT and apply again. But say you get really lucky and get an acceptance with a low MCAT - they you saved yourself a year of re-studying. Am I right in this thinking?

Yes, that is correct. I called 15-20 schools last year and asked if being a reapplicant hurt my chance. Every school I talked to encouraged me to apply. Reapplicants are on the same playing field as first-timers. Be careful though. Some schools specificially say that if you have applied 3x before, you are not qualified to submit another application.
