interesting. I dont know how competitive it is- generally people make the mistake of thinking Big Name, COmpetitive Program, when that's amazingly not always the case. But in this case i suspect it is pretty competitive; derm is no matter what. But hey, Stephew got into radonc at Johns Hopkins!
Another friend is in NYC in Derm by the way from sgu class of 2000 (its not on the SGU web as he transfered after a year of IM).
 
I think I've met her a couple of times- doing internship in Brooklyn and then derm research.

Cool girl, but not matched into a derm spot yet.

The other guy you mention out of SGU is almost finished w/his derm residency, and one of the most solid guys you'll ever meet.

Hahaha :laugh: A response from the great stephew! Very nice...How exactly did you pull that off? My brother's currently has a 4.0 over his first two terms. Not bad for a kid that got rejected by every single US medical school he applied to...not even a waitlist! And by the way, assuming that you're the same stephew on valuemd, my dad reads your sgu posts religiously

Wow. Thanks for the info. The latter did some research or something though, didn't he? And wasn't he the student president of SGU or something like that?

hey zoolander thanks, if that's true sgu should take that down. ill give them a buzz tomorrow.

As for me, Ive had people say I have "connections", or that I'd pulled a lewinski. The boring truth is i had really good letters of recc (not obtained by connections or lewinskis) and i had published clinical research in breast cancer in peer reviewed journals prior to and during med school. JHH liked that. And finally, i had a really positive interview with them (again, no lewinskis). Which brings me to a point: while IMGs correctly weight the USMLE, they do so to the neglect of other things. I *highly* reccomend research for competitive fields and from being on both sides of the residency candidacy process I can attest that if you are arrogent, act like an ass, start back-biting your colleages, general nonsence, you are likely going to get bumped down or knocked off the rank list. Conversely, an interesting friendly and caring nice person gets bumped up. Oh and get your ERAS application in *right away*. The longer you wait the less inteview spots and the less good you'll look when they get choosy.

Oh and tell your dad to please ignore some of my recent back and forth with some shady characters on VMD- I was taking out my aggressions from boards reviewing on some dolts there. Bad form on my part.

Yes he did. He also this year won a derm residency award. He had a couple of options for derm but he had to take the back door by doing some research and applying while doing IM. But he earned it. He is a great guy as you say and was at my wedding. Oh and another sgu grad also in radonc won the national radonc residency award this year. Di dont know if he was sga pres but frankly, those titles mean little on your CV (and since I was an officer of a couple of groups I can say it in good faith).

Ive spoken with sgu; the alumni coordinator is double checking the harvard derm thing; she is under the impression that this person is a resident because she remembers a phone call but will still double check.

People make the mistake of thinking that the name of the med school really impacts residencies, it does, but not to the degree of individual achievements. Anything is possible no matter what school you're coming from as long as it's accredited. This proves it and should inspire other students that are FMGs.
