I am a Harvard 2011 MPH student, now looking for housing.
hope someone could compare living in Shattuck with Trilogy.
how about the rent, amenities, environments, parking convenience?

in addition, some people said that the main advantage of Shattuck is its social atmosphere for HSPH students.
do most people think it's really an important consideration?
or increasing the diversity of roommates by living in Trilogy would be better?

Thanks in advance! 🙂

I'm also considering both. I tried to find the walking distance from Shattuck to the SPH but couldn't find it. Any ideas?

I live in Trilogy. I've never stayed at Shattuck House but I have friends that have stayed there (during the summer session).

Shattuck is an older building that has a small library/study area, common room, and fitness center. The rooms are general larger than Trilogy and the rent is also a bit cheaper. I've only visited Shattuck during the summer time; when I was there, it seemed quite social and lively with lots of group activities.

Trilogy is a newer building -- I think it was constructed in the mid 2000's. It's actually quite nice. There are three connecting towers. The one of the middle is rented out to Harvard students/affiliates. I stay in a studio unit, which is quite small, but the 1- and 2-bedroom units are comparable in size to what you might find in Shattuck. The building has in-house laundry, a fitness center, multiple study areas, and underground parking. It's located right across the street from Landmark Center where there are restaurants, a movie theater, and some retail stores. On the other side of the block, there is a grocery store.

Walking from Shattuck to the HSPH probably takes around 15 minutes for the average speed walker. Walking from Trilogy to the HSPH probably is 20-25 minutes for the average person. However, there is a (free) shuttle that goes between Trilogy/Landmark Center to the HSPH that comes every 20-30 minutes (depending on time of day) so that's nice during the winter.

Personally, I'm a quiet person -- and mostly keep to myself anyway. So, it was clear to me that Trilogy was the better choice given my preferences.

Thank you for such an informative post! Based on what you wrote, I'm kind of leaning towards Trilogy, although Shattuck would still be an excellent choice. I wonder if Shattuck also has a shuttle. I'd guess not given how close it is. Btw, how do you pronounce "Shattuck"?

Hi there,

Both places are good choices. Shattuck doesn't have a shuttle because it is closer. Here is a map from Google.

Point A is Trilogy. Point B is the HSPH. Between the two is Park Drive. Shattuck is basically at the intersection between Park Drive and Queensbury. That may give you some idea as to the relative distances.

Btw, the map shows a route that is a bit odd. Most people cut through the grassy (green) area next to Park Drive over to Louis Pasteur Avenue, and enter by the Harvard Med School Quad area. It's a shorter walk that way.

I pronounce Shattuck as "Sha" - "tic."

Thanks for the reply, summervirus. Shattuck and Trilogy aren't too far from each other. Honestly, I'd be happy with either one. Would you happen to know how competitive it is to secure housing in either of these places?

I'm actually not sure about competitiveness... I think it probably changes year to year. If you try emailing the HSPH (Shattuck) and HU Housing (Trilogy), they might be able to give you a better idea.

Summervirus,

I understand that you are a current HSPH student. I am an admitted international student. I have to decide between HSPH and Hopkins.
I applied to MS(2) in GHP @ HSPH. Can you give me some feedback on the school. ALso, if you don't mind, Can you please connect me with a current student of the GHP program?

Thanks much!!

Hi, I'm also an international student. I don't know much about other schools because I only applied to Harvard and never looked into any other program. The reason I came to this school is to be with a specific mentor. I've really enjoyed my experience greatly. I posted some general feedback about what I thought about the school in another thread, here. To be honest with you, I don't know anyone in the GHP concentration. I'm in the clinical effectiveness concentration.
