If you got into Harvard for the class of 2012, why are half of your posts in the 2008-2009 NC secondary thread??

Hey everyone,

This thread was meant to provide people out there with an idea of what it takes to get into HMS by getting an idea of the profile of the most recent accepted applicants.

So far there's been one person who responded to the original thread....the rest are all his/her fans...

Thanks again everyone!🙂🙂

Buddy, you need to get your mind off of what it takes to get into __(name brand school)___. There are a multitude of factors involved and attempting to discern a pattern (which is exactly what you are attempting to do with this thread) will ultimately prove futile.

Bottom line: focus on what you enjoy and the med school that is the best fit will find you.

I thought it was 35/36 and 3.8/3.9gpa?

You're obviously not reading the thread then...i said it would help "to get an idea"...besides I'm not trying to determine my undergraduate path...i'm just trying to get a gauge of what it takes to get into some of the top schools....especially because as a Canadian..i don't have the luxury of feeling good about my chances in a home state school.....catch my drift enjoydrywax!

Anyway thanks for your input nonetheless!

I hope you don't believe that's his real profile. If you think that guy was being real, you might have a problem with common sense. And why do you need to know what grade, scores, and EC the "typical" HMS applicant has? You can just look up this information in the MSAR. Are you a high school senior who's considering going premed?

If that's the case, HMS might really be beyond reach. It's hard to get into any US medical school as a foreign applicant, even the lower-tier ones (most state schools don't accept foreign applicants, and the private medical schools that do often accept only one or two per class). The ones that do get accepted often have MCAT above 35+ and GPA >3.8 - this is for the "average" medical school. For Harvard, it will be even higher, their average last year was 3.9 GPA and 37 MCAT, with most students having done significant research publications, and EC, therefore, in order for you to have a chance, you'll probably need perfect GPAs and MCAT around 40 since you will be applying as a foreign applicant.

I hate it when someone asks for info of some kind and someone else replies along the lines of "you're not supposed to want to know this information"!

Information empowers people. The OP isn't going to wager his/her future on this knowledge!

Anyway, I got rejected after interviewing at Harvard for the HST program. At that point they claimed 1 in 3 would make it. I got a 35 (9v 14p 12b) and 3.9. See the MDApps for more info.

Thanks for the info chairmanMao....btw the MSAR does not have 08 accepted applicant stats....I called the admissions office...according to them, the criteria for Canadian students to be successful is not dissimilar to US applicants for admission...however, i appreciate the effort!

Thanks gopher22 for that reply...I was also wondering if there were any grad students (MSc/PhD) that gained acceptance this past year....i would really appreciate to hear from you guys specifically since I just finished my MSc at University of Toronto and am currently in the process of writing up my paper for publication...Thanks again!

Not dissimilar, but much more competitive. They might only have one or two spots that go to foreign applicants (out of the hundreds or thousands who apply), whereas for US applicants, they have many more spots (around 80) that go to US applicants

I got into HMS new pathway in the '08 class, though I decided not to matriculate. I guess I'm who you want to talk to, because I also had an MS degree when applying. 37 MCAT and 3.85 gpa. PM me if you want more details, but really, it's just a school, not worth this kind of premature obsession!

lol ballerstatus is applying early decision to UNC this year

sorry, my father got laid off last year, and it was too late in the cycle to apply for financial aid, and thus, rather than attend HMS, i decided to teach at a middle school for a year to support my family. I've also decided to apply to UNC early because I really cannot afford HMS and put my parents through the hell of taking loans/paying that much

lol I have no problem believing you... but how were you Princeton's student council president for the class of 08 if you took last year off working at a middle school? wouldn't you have been a senior in college?

This is not true. Nor is the foreign seats bit you stated afterward. Most private schools do not distinguish between Canadian and American students, though public schools will. When it comes to private schools, though, I have emailed and called well over a dozen of them, and all have unambiguously stated that there is no foreign applicant pool for Canadians. We compete alongside American students.

Bozz, for Christ's sake, he's kidding.

lol for some reason I want to believe him. I want to think it's possible for someone to have accomplished so much as an undergrad.

if you fail to gain admission to HMS, regardless of your stats, consider your application cycle a failure....

sdn is way too much fun. we can be anyone. hahaha

yeah because my 39/3.8 from top 25 is so much worse. 🙄

I meant, if you actually put a little more work into your fabrication, no one would've known. Don't assume.

IE, make sure all your "stats" line up and tell that little lie you did a couple posts back.

You can be anybody you want on SDN. It can be a person's escape from the pre-med reality!
