I'm looking to hear anyone's story that went through the med school app process, 5-6 years post undergrad while finishing up a phd.

Its kind of a complicated situation. Also if yo did go this route did you go through your undergrad's pre med committee?

Hi there,
I applied after I completed my qualifying exam for Ph.D. I did not have to use the undergrad pre-med committee as I was no longer an undergraduate. If you are a graduate student and not in a post bacc, you do not have to go through the "committee" letter route. Just be sure that you know when you will have completed your Ph.D work (except for very minor revisions). I was extensively asked about my ultimate completion date as no medical school is going to take you if you have not completed your graduate degree. I was required to have a letter from my committee chairman as to the extent of my completion of work at four of the six schools that I applied to.

njbmd 🙂

i completed my phd in august 2003. i called each school that i am applying to this year and asked them specifically the type of LORs i will need. they all agreed that i did NOT need to go back to my undergrad professors, which was a HUGE relief on my part (honestly, who is going to remember me after 9 years??). they just said that i would definitely need a letter from my thesis advsior and couple of other letters from my phd program. since i am sending them out individually, i am using a service called interfolio. that is so much easier for me.

ohh...i hope i get ito at least ONE school!!!
good luck everyone!!!

I applied right after I completed my PhD. I primarily used my undergraduate premed committee. But my graduate premed committee also helped out. Talk to both committees and see which one will give you the most support.

I applied after doing a Ph.D. and a clinical and research postdoc. (2 years). After I had taken the MCAT and applied to medical schools, I had to take a couple of prereqs to be eligible for admission. I did that in the evenings. I applied late and I was also an international student at the time of application, but not at the time of interview. As you can see, complicated situations can work out quite nicely if you are organized and take care of everything early on which it sounds like you are doing. I'll start medical school this year. My Ph.D. advisor, the Chair of Medicine at my graduate school, and my postdoc. mentor wrote references for me. At 28, I'm not that much older than the average entering medical student. Follow your heart....

Congratulations to your acceptance. I am in a similar situation and applying for the next year admission. Did your PhD/postdoc help you get accepted to many med schools? Which schools did you apply to and get accepted? Which schools favor non-trad with PhD? research-heavy private schools? Were you asked about why you wanted to switch to MD after PhD + postdoc years, and how did you react?

Thanks.
