Has anyone ever had to explain getting paid under the table?

Would this be frowned upon? There was a time when this was an option for me, and I had to take it because I wouldn't have been about to survive. I know it was basically tax evasion. There would definitely be a gap in my background-check that would contradict my employment history in my application. Have you had experience with this? How'd it go?

Generally adcoms don't care a whole lot for illegal and obviously unethical practices. I'd probably leave it off. If it was during school, you can simply say you were in school and needed to focus on your studies (or similar). It's pretty difficult to rationalize your way out of breaking the law in an effective and acceptable manner during an interview!

I personally wouldn't talk about it since technically its illegal! unless you mention that it was like a family ran business or something!

what kind of background check are you expecting? This is not an FBI background check for security clearance. There is a criminal background check but nothing about employment...

Just list whatever job it was under your employment history so there's no unexplained gap. You don't need to send in your 1099 form with your AMCAS.

Anyone who's ever worked as a waiter/waitress/bartender has probably fudged the truth about their tips during tax season.
