Hi my fellow SDN's, I have a question. Have you or do you know of anyone that has gotten accepted to medical school with a D on their transcript? In one of the semester I got a D in one of my non-science class. I had two family members passed away that semester so was not able to attend class for the most part. I have graduated so am not able to retake that class. Will this prevent me from getting in medical school? My overall GPA is at a 3.5, and science GPA is at a 3.4. Any help will be more than appreciated. Thank you.

You're fine...I wouldn't even bother addressing it unless the question comes up in an interview

Don't worry. If it's a pre-req (schools don't accept D's for pre reqs) or it's bringing your GPA down significantly, you can retake at a community college/state school/whatever. AACOMAS will REPLACE the D with the new grade.

Exactly, so why not retake it? Thank goodness for that AACOMAS policy; there actually was a semester there long ago where I was young/naive, imbibing regularly, and chasing skirt all too frequently. No regrets. 😀

High five, Turk!

Ya...I had one...or more...I actually had 0.0 gpa for one class. I don't know what happened...it was all a blur, but I retook the class and got a 3.5.

Oh and BTW I got accepted in 2/3 of my interviews. 🙂

I have an F and I am not retaking it. You'll be fine. I probably should though.

I got a D in orgo of all classes, and was accepted at 4/5 of my interviews. You'll be fine. I retook it and got a 3.33, but if it's not important you might not even need to retake it. Couldn't hurt

Anecdotally, one school where I interviewed has the admissions coordinator (who has never taken any BCMP classes, fwiw) go line-by-line through each applicant's transcripts, to hear the explanation for every red flag. They budget about 15 minutes for this. When you're done, it feels exactly like a dumptruck full of dog poo backed onto you.

So to the OP, this is pretty much the worst that can happen. As everybody has explained, a D isn't an app killer, particularly if you have a reasonable story.

And for folks going into interviews with 20+ years of college classes across 5 transcripts, with lots of anomalies to explain, I recommend going to your happy place and staying there until it's over.

Thank you everyone for your response as I do value everyone's input. So with that being said, do you guys think I should address it in my personal statement as to why my grades dropped significantly that semester? When the admission comittee look at your application do they look at every class you have taken? Or do they just look at your GPA?

AACOMAS uses the grade you got the second (or third or fourth) time around for GPA calculations.

Do NOT put this in your PS. Only put stuff that makes you look good in your PS. Every secondary app has a place to explain your transcripts.

Now, I agree with DrMidlife that you should "sell yourself" in your PS. However, if you have some personal turmoil that seriously affected your grades for a period of time, I'd mention the "rough seas" at some point in your PS but describe moreso how you overcame the adversity - and I speak from personal experience; the adcoms want to know what you're made of - your character.

I didn't get a D, but there was a significant change in one semester with me that were 2 C+'s. I wasn't allowed to retake them, because you can only retake D's or F's at my school. My mom aunt and uncle died. I definitely mentioned it in my PS, but not as a "this is why i did bad" thing. It was more of a "that was my proudest semester because I stayed enrolled" kinda thing. If you mention it, make sure it has a positive spin. That's what I think at least.

^^I got in with a D on my transcript covered by a C.. and a few other C's as well.. I did not mention it in my personal statement.. but I did mention it in my interview at LECOM B.. it was a closed file interview and I didn't want them to be shocked when they read my profile!!! But I did not mention it at LECOM E because it was open file so I figured if they wanted to know they would ask.. and they did not.. I was accepted to both, btw.

Back when I was ******ed, I got tons of D's. Just finish strong. No letdowns. That will make it look like an anomaly, and they will overlook it, like GA-PCOM did with almost all of my undergrad, before my post-bac.

You're like the janitor in Flowers for Algernon.

I've never heard of that, but I'm guessing the janitor was really good-looking?
