first of all, CONGRATULATIONS to all those who were accepted!! i'm so jealous of everyone of you... i guess just a couple more days/weeks til WINTER BREAK!!!

one question i wanted to ask was has anyone studied abroad here? i'm planning to study abroad in my native country next fall instead of graduating early and i was wondering if anyone has gone through it before... do you think it helps to study abroad? (i won't be able to take any pre-reqs though.. it'll just be language/culture classes) or if anyone wants to share their overall study abroad experiences, i'll be happy to hear about them too...

once again, congratulations to all, and IT'S THE LAST STRETCH before christmas so good luck to everyone taking finals!!!

I studied abroad and had the time of my life. It was far and away the best thing I have done, besides being pre-dental. I say do it, unless you need to take pre-reqs. Nobody on interviews asked me about mine, but I put it in my personal statement and had several comments on how much they liked mine.

I agree with DDSjunior - one of the best things I've done. I will say that I've had some difficulty with the transcripts, however, and my dental school applications. Because my courses were through the overseas institutions as opposed to a US one, I have to get my credits 'evaluated' (which costs around $200 and takes a long time) through a service in the states. They are very picky as to how they get the transcript (I'm having mine sent from France for the THIRD time). This trouble doesn't outweigh my experience overseas. Just plan ahead and you'll be fine. Oh, it's good that you aren't doing prereqs either as that seemed to be a bigger deal.

Totally worth it! Two of my interviewers did ask about it and seemed very interested! It was one of the best experiences I've ever had!

thank you so much for the replies!
also, is it actually required to get the transcript and stuff validated/verified?
cause i won't even need the credits i get from studying abroad for degree/graduation...

I studied abroad through Arcadia University, and it was no problem with the school issuing my transcript. In fact, it really helped my GPA because I got all A's there, and the grades had never been calculated into my undergrad GPA (my college counted it as P/F), but on AADSAS it counts... so that was awesome. I don't think it will help your apps; I'm sure a lot of people have studied abroad. But it was definitely an amazing experience and I recommend going abroad to anyone who is able to!

I studied abroad my senior year of college, and definitely did not regret it!! Travelling and learning in another culture/environment was definitely one of the most memorable parts of my college experience. So, i recommend...go go go!

Plus, a couple interviewers asked me about my study abroad, and said that studying another language was a definite plus! 😉

In response to your question on if it is required, I'm not really sure. I would say call the schools and ask. I put it down as one of the schools I attended because 'they' say you have to list them all and that if they find out you didn't list something then they could deny you on that basis. So I just wanted to be safe. Anyway, AADSAS accepted the transcript from the institution I studied through, but I thought everything was fine until UCSF called and told me I was rejected because they didn't receive their OWN evaluated copy (even though AADSAS received all my transcripts, etc). So now I'm doing the evaluation because some schools want it and others don't (my state school said they didn't need the evaluation, but I did have to talk to about 5 people to get it all sorted out). At this point, I don't know who needs it and who doesn't, but I'm getting it evaluated anyway so that I'll have it ready if they ask for it and I won't have another UCSF call.....

Study abroad if you have the time! I went to Italy and did nothing but language and culture...through EAP. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.
I had no problem with my transcripts being sent, because EAP does it through my school🙂 so I had no extra work.
GO!!!

I have to say that I sort of disagree with the "don't think it will help your apps" part. It is an amazing experience and at the same time you learn a lot of things (non-academic). Living in a foreign country and submersing yourself in another language and culture teaches you a lot more about 'life'. Not everyone has the initiative to go abroad and the ones that do usually come back as better people. I'm sure Admissions people do look at a student's initiative to go abroad and make the most out of their undergrad. career. 😎

without a doubt, study abroad if you have the opportunity to do so. it definitely makes you a better candidate, as i'm sure there are very few pre-dents that take time out of their undergrad to study in a foreign country. being exposed to the language and culture of another country is amazing and well worth a semester of your time
