Im getting ready to take my test on Friday, and all of these recent posts about the DAT having stuff on it that people have never seen before and the disheartening scores that many are recieving is starting to make me a little nervous. So has the DAT become more difficult?

Well, having to use dry erase makes it more difficult imo. One might even go as far to say that the low 15 QR average is because of dry erase...

It definitely has the possibility to make it more difficult - I think this will depend on the individual test center as to how it affects you. I ended up having no problems with the dry erase and it probably actually helped me as I tend to have a REALLY messy scratch sheet when I do QR to the point where I occasionally lose my spot...

As far as the DAT becoming more difficult, I really don't think so. If you know your stuff and have good multiple-choice-test taking skills, you can do well on the DAT.

I agree with Flipper. I really don't think the DAT has become harder at all. Just study and take tons of practice tests. Also practice controlling your nerves so you can think clearly during the tougher conceptual questions.

All tests are easy when you know the material and difficult when you do not know the material. The 2007 DAT means were lower than previous years.

just wondering what is meant by dry erase pens. Are these the same thing as those super thick dry erase markers?

Also, how much scrap paper is provided during the exam?

Thanks.

There aren't any papers whatsoever. You get 2 laminated plastic sheets with 2 dry erase markers (and they could be thick or thin).

It makes sense that the DAT is harder this year, like with any standardized exam they tend to get harder every year as the field gets more competitive.

However, if you have the approproate study materials and study SMART NOT HARD -- well ok study SMART AND HARD, you can do well on the DAT. I did pretty well on the exam, got into some amazing schools and yeah the test was really hard -- BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE. Like I said get the right materials. I used the DAT Destroyer and it made all the difference. It covers ALL THE BASES (and acids) -- it's massive, and can be overwhelming at first glance, but if you take the time to go through it carefully it becomes manageable. My experience was that even when I saw questions that were really unfamiliar, the Destroyer helped me reason out questions logically, based on clues and what i did know, like one question asked what some word was that I had never seen, but i knew the latin meaning bc it was related to the heart -- so i guessed and I was right.

Also, make sure you get some tests that you can work on the computer and that will time you -- it's crucial. I used Achiever and Top Score. Those also had PAT sections (which are not in Destroyer).

Those, and my bio notes and textbook from school are the only materials I used. Destroyer was CRUCIAL to my success -- so I'm giving you the heads up -- don't be discouraged, don't let people on this board psyche you out -- get the destroyer, a few other materials and study those like there's no tomorrow and YOU WILL DO FINE!

good luck!

What kind of "alterations" did you have in mind and do you have concrete evidence?
By alterations I meant switching to dry erase boards and something about people getting low QR scores doesn't seem to fit the trends. Perhaps that is the reason you saw a decrease in AA average in 2007.
This is just speculation on my part, I have no evidence 🙂.

You could be right. On the flip side making standardized test harder every year would negate the most important reason for giving standardized test. The basic idea is to have an exam that will be able to compare students from year to year not just a convenient comparison for the short term. The measure of competitiveness is a function of the number of applicants not a function of the mean scores.
