Let's say you have a low gpa and MCAT and you didn't get an invite for:

a) secondary

b) interview

...but, later in the cycle (say in September) you indicate that you will be retaking in Sept.

Would the school go back to your file and re-evaluate you based on your new score, or is it game over simply because you did not indicate that you will be retaking.

This seems trivial but I'm just trying to see what would be a 'better' move. Indicating that you will be retaking in September NOW, will probably mean that they won't look at your app until they see the new score. But if the rest of your app is 'ok', just hope that you will get an interview and let them know your updated score later in the cycle?

Just wondering what someone in this situation has done, or will do if they were in this person's shoe.

I would indicate now that you will be retaking. I don't know this for a fact, but here's what I think they do.

Review your current stats and see your current MCAT score. Obviously then there is one of two options.

1. MCAT too low. See that you're retaking and reject you now and/or put you on hold pending your new score.

2. MCAT fine. Offer you secondary/interview/acceptance provided your MCAT score improves or at least does not go down.

In other words, I doubt they see "MCAT Planned" and automatically ignore your app until the new score is out. They probably evaluate you as is and go from there.

At our school, game over 'til next year.

Hey Goro!

I needed some advice on the topic of my personal statement and was wondering if its ok to run it by you in a PM?

Ouch!

It hurts to know the truth, but thanks for the insight Goro.

Ok heres the deal...you obviously know Goro is an adcom, so he knows what he's talking about. So someone would have to be crazy or dumb to comment to his contrary...that being said, I have a somewhat contrary story to share at the risk of appearing foolish.

my friend this past cycle did retake the MCAT later in the cycle, got wait listed and was accepted because of improved GPA and MCAT. So, maybe it depends on how low you are talking and how close you are in contention?

Just had to add my anecdotal account...😉

It was hypothetical to begin with as I'm still waiting for my MCAT score, but based on few FLs that I've done, I have a feeling it might be below the average though. I'm praying to just hit an average so that at least, my app won't get tossed out the window. You know...less of a guilt trip if I were to retake in Sept. 11. Why not take earlier? Well, got a final exam on the 10th, so I rather not screw up the MCAT twice. GPA is in the low 3 and planning on two retakes in Fall.

Thanks for sharing your anecdotal account. Do you mind revealing the name of the school? You could PM if you're not comfortable sharing. 😀

I know there are always cases like these but you have to treat them as the exception to the rule, outliers.

for sure...and you are right to focus on your finals, GPA is really the most important when its in the lower 3's.

Also, I think they are taking the writing section out in 2013, so thats added incentive to wait.

Though I don't think he'll care, I'll PM you with the specifics of his situation since its not my story to tell.

And you'll notice that I wrote "at OUR school..." so naturally, there will be exceptions.

Goro, can you clarify? Do you mean game over for those with low stats that DON'T indicate they're retaking? What about for those that indicate that they're retaking in the middle of the cycle - does your school wait for that score before rejecting the applicant?

I think he meant that it's game over if you don't indicate because your stats would be too low to be considered. But if you indicate in the middle of the cycle, well, we better hope that they didn't get through our app yet to toss it out before seeing the indication.
