This is going to be my third full week of college as a freshman, and I think I have made a mistake. I went home this weekend to visit my family, and I didn't get much done in terms of academics. I've now got a test I'm unprepared for that starts in two hours, I couldn't do my biology reading (therefore, I'm going to fail the quiz for both the lecture and the lab) and I threw together this lab report which is most definitely mediocre.
I've barely started college and I feel like I've already ruined it. There goes my 4.0. I only want to get into Michigan, but I don't think it's going to happen. This is most likely the wrong place for a venting thread, but I needed to put it somewhere.

No, you've got plenty of wiggle room in this class and beyond. You will be ok.

First mistake: don't go home when you have a lot of work to do, or if you're home, make sure you get stuff done. This isn't high school so you can't put stuff off until the last minute.

A 4.0 isn't everything, and you're only a few weeks in, so there's really no reason to panic or think you ruined your chances. Plenty of chances to turn that all around!

Another mistake: you have a test in two hours and yet you're posting on sdn. Priorities my young Padawan. GO STUDY

No, the first mistake is having no perspective and freaking out for no good reason.

The second mistake is thinking you can get work done effectively when visiting family.

You can probably still pull in "A" or "A-" in the class (assuming you get at least half of the questions right on your exam and quiz) but you need to tighten up.

During second year, some kid parked behind my car and blocked me in at one campus. I couldn't leave so I missed my orgo exam at another campus. My professor wouldn't let me make up the exam (despite the fact that I had proof lol) so I started off the semester with an F. I put in a lot of work in the class and finished with an A.

you haven't ruined anything..yet.. so stop acting defeated🙂 good luck

Unless you were able to drop a test grade or you had 6 midterms or something, I find that hard to believe. Even with the conservative assumption that you had 3 midterms worth a total of 30% (10 grade points each), you'd have to make a 100 on every assignment, midterm, and final for the rest of the semester to pull off the A. Furthermore, if this situation actually did occur, I know I would have fought it tooth and nail and gotten the department involved if I actually had a legitimate reason for missing the test that was out of my control. However, I can see your prof not letting you make it up if the option to drop a test grade was built into the course, which seems like the most probable explanation for your outlandish story.

Not an outlandish story but its up to you to believe what you want.

My professor provided generous amounts of extra credit on exams (you could score 175% on an exam) , we had quizzes every week, term papers, and home work assignments. The final was worth more than any other exams and I got an A. As for as my professor not letting me make up the exam, he said it was his policy. I could have tried to fight this but my school is pretty slow getting things looked over by the dean or head of department. It just made more sense to study and do best I could.

Because that's totally normal for a university OChem course.

Every school is different. Some Orgo professors don't give extra credit however curve the class at the end. Some don't give a damn and fail more than half the class. Who cares? My post was just to explain to the op if he gets his act together and works hard he can still salvage his grade and still have more than a great chance at med school. I'm sorry if I didn't post a ridiculous job application in attempt to be funny like you. Stop trying to pick fights because I will not fight with you. Consider this my last response to you regardless of whatever you post after this.

Cool post. You offered a silly and misleading scenario, and I pointed it out. Sorry if that hurt your feewings little buddy.

Regardless of his experience his point was that the poster can still recover and still get into med school. Your immaturity makes you look like the one who is butt hurt.

Also, not sure how anyone knows whats normal for any class when its up to the professor to decide how to run it. For whats its worth, I did not have any extra credit in my organic chem class but my professor did curve at the end..

I have it on good authority that UM accepts people with GPAs below 4.0.

Simmer down.

It's not the end of the world. Learn from your mistake. I think the hardest part in the process is staying even keel; not getting too high or too low (although, most people have trouble with the 'not getting too low' part.). If it's any consolation, I absolutely bombed my second lab the other day. :meanie: Lab is 13% of our final average, so yeah. My 'A' went to a 'B' but I aced the third lab and exam last week and the 88 has crept back up to a 90, which is an 'A' at my institution.

I don't have any doubt that you're every bit as capable as me and the other few thousand premed/med students who hit a snag & had to repair the damage. Once you bomb something, let it go and focus on what you can do in the future to prevent it from happening again.

On another note, posting here when an exam was two hours away? Bad idea - especially in your case given that you're unfamiliar with the material. Don't concede defeat. You should use every bit of time you have before an exam to review - even if you think you know the material like the backside of your hand.
