it happened once to me. i was sleeping on the plane around 11 pm at that time, then all of sudden, i started hearing people talking, etc.
then i think that i saw the flight attendant dragged someone all the way thru. and then one asked if there is a doctor on the plane, etc.

at that time, i was not a med. student, yet. i wished that i was. hehe.
i am sure that some of you may have actually saved someone on the planes, that would be interesting to read.

I was coming back from an interview in West Virginia into Logan, I was on one of these little 40 seaters... the flight attendent comes on and says the "anyone with medical knowledge..." I'm like, OMG, I never fly, here I am on a small plane of 40 people, I'm probably the only person who's got any knowledge, (I'm an EMT, now med student)... What do you think happened?? THE GUY IN FRONT OF ME WAS A DOCTOR!! So much for getting to save the day. I guess if he had to start doing CPR I would've gone up and helped, but it was just a girl having an asthma attack. OH well, my time will come. (nice thing was everyone else was put in a holding pattern while we got to zoom past, got in 15 minutes early) 🙂

A surgical registrar friend of mine was flying back to Australia from India when that "is there a doctor on board?" call came over. She had to deliver an 18 week gestation miscarriage. They couldn't land or do anything because they were over the Indian Ocean at the time, and it happened too fast. Turned out that the mother knew there was a problem but didn't want to be treated in India so got on the flight home anyway....

Our respiratory tutor says he was on a plane with someone who was developing a pneumo. It resolved when the altitude was lowered.

This wasn't on a plane, but it's related. I was in London for a school project/study abroad program, and one day I was in one of the tube stations, going up the escalator, and heard a call over the PA system for "anyone with medical training, please see nearest staff member". I am an EMT-B. So I picked up my pace (in the tube stations people like me walk up the escalator, on the right) and found the nearest staff member...turned out to be a false alarm; there was no medical emergency! But boy did it create an adrenaline rush...

I was coming back from to the US from London. We were midway over teh atlantic ocean when the call came over. I was half way through my 2nd year then, so I couldn't do anything really.

But a guy in the back had a manic episode and hit his girlfriend. They had 3 guys in the back holding this guy down. I got to talk to the girlfriend for some of the trip as she sat down across the aisle from me, crying most of the time. The guy had some mental issues, but was well controlled. He was acting weird before he had got on the plane, but she didn't think much of it.
Half way there we diverted to Iceland to drop them off.

Delayed our flight by like 3-4 hours.

I got a free hotel room in NYC for 3 hours :|

Flight from LA to Aukland. Middle of the night and I am sitting with my back to the lav.

I hear this terrible moaning then stridorous sound.
The flight attendant in the galley walked a couple of paces to the potty door and banged yelling "are you all right?"

She beamed at me having saved a couple in stage three delecto flagrante.

I was flying to mexico with my family when I was little. The call for the doctor came out because the pilot was in excruciating pain. My dad was able to help, apparently there was something stuck in his ear. My dad always carries a pen light and other basic tools of the trade.
