Hi all,

It has been about 6 years since I've taken a math course. It also doesn't help that I've always had a strong aversion towards math. How do I even begin reviewing concepts for the QR section from scratch? I can't just do practice problems. What thorough review do you recommend? I took the DAT Bootcamp Exam 1 and scored 17 on the QR with no studying. Please help me! I had no idea what most of those problems were even asking for.

Thanks so much.

I had not taken math since my freshman year first semester of college.

It is not as bad as you think honestly.

I would invest in the DAT Math Destroyer!
It helps alot and the questions are similar IMO

Was in the same boat as you, Khan Academy was a god send. B/w that and Math Destroyer managed to pull of a 20. But going through Math Destroyer was painful, just stick with it

Yes, the Math Destroyer is painful and Tests 11 and 12 were so brutal.
But IMO it paid off, because the questions on the real DAT were kinda the same, but on a easier scale. Like the age questions and the filling up 2 tanks question in the Destroyer were pretty good practice problems.

Ended with a 19 on it... but it was considered 91%ile. So Maybe I had a harder math portion? No idea.

Chad's Math, also, I should add, were decent too, esp if you want to brush up on basic math.

17 in QR bootcamp isn't that bad to be honest. Thats pretty good since its usually harder than the real thing. You can go through chads QR videos to get a refresher since its been a few years. Then do math destroyer and pick between qr bootcamp or vault QR ( I did vault)

Start with Kaplan and Math Destroyer problems. For more explanations you can get Schaums outlines or any precalculus books. Good luck.

You may not have taken a "math" class, but I'll bet you've taken a math-intensive course recently such as gen chem or physics. 🙂

When I had to study for the DAT, I also hadn't taken a math class since junior year of high school.

Start with Chad's QR videos, and then do the Math Destroyer. BTW, anything in the Math Destroyer past test 8 or so is super hard. I never touched those tests, LOL! I wasn't aiming for a killer high QR score, though. I'm like you--math has never been my favorite. I was perfectly satisfied with a 21!

I definitely agree with Glimmer1991. Chad's QR videos with the corresponding video quizzes followed by the Math Destroyer did the trick for me. Know the strategies of answering the destroyer questions. I feel like this is what makes or break your QR section since it is a very time-restricted section. If you can recognize what strategy you need to answer the question, that saves you a ton of time. My other advice that goes along with this: recognize when a certain problem is going to take a while. If you know how to solve it, make a quick note but move on and find the quick questions. You don't want to leave an easy/quick problem untouched at the very end because you spent too much time trying to figure out a lengthy and/or difficult question early on.

That being said, you might be the type of person that feeds off of the confidence of answering a long or difficult question. In that case, you might want to answer the long questions right away.

In either case, practice enough times so that you know your style and stick to it. By the time the real DAT QR comes, you should feel a sense of routine in terms of your timing and approach.

Hope that helps!

:luck: NotreDental

Edit: Glimmer1991 was also right about the difficulty of the Math Destroyer. The tests towards the end of the test are tough. Don't get demoralized, there's no time for demoralization in your studies, and especially not on the DAT! Keeping working at it until you fully understand it and you'll be fine.

I took calc in 2004, and no other math after that. I pretty much forgot everything except adding and subtracting (and a little more).
First, I started out with Chad's math videos, which got me started, but wasn't quite enough to cover all types of questions.

trudged through all of the Math destroyer problem sets (14 sets).
Averaged about 28~32 out of 40 questions on every single one of them on my first tries, with no time restriction.
Planned on doing them over again, but didn't have time before the test. 🙁

Ended up getting 23 on the QR.
The real thing was about two notches easier than the DAT destroyer and about half as difficult as the DAT BOOTCAMP math.
don't use the DATBOOTCAMP math section unless you want a downer.. It depressed me so much I had to play online game 5 hours straight.

Anyways, to make it short, go with MATH destroyer and DAT destroyer math section (towards the back of the book)
