Anyone know the best way to get stuff to the mainland? I've got a lot of gear (bike, snowboard, surfboard, etc) that's big and bulky. It's not super important that I get it on time so I was thinking of sending it on a boat, but I hear loose freight is a pain in the a$$. You think it would be really expensive to send it UPS or something like that?

ps-I talked to WICHE and they said we should hear in August. She also said the number of applicants this year was the same as previous years (which would mean 2 or 3), but there are already 5 Hawaii kids going to my school next year (!) that I know of (and 1 maybe), and 4 of those people are waiting to hear from WICHE.

Sounds like it'll be expensive. If you don't get your board out to SF though, mind if i borrow it when I head out there?

Hey Pine~holy shmoly 5 HI kids in your class! I don't even think there will be that many in my entire school.

I lived in Japan for a for a short time and accumulated a whole lot of stuff- and then when it came time to come home, I could only take so much on the plane, so I sent stuff by boat... it was okay, but my boxes got a bit beat up.

Not sure what would be best, but here are some other options:
1. If you know someone who works for an airlines, they might be able to help... during undergrad we had big boxes of junk sent up from Hawaii for free on ATA for our luaus--but it was sort of as a service donation. Or they used to have "gate checks"-- drop off at the airport in HI and pick up over there. Not sure if they still do that sorta thing with the stricter regulations.

2. It might be reasonable (airfare is sorta cheap to SanFran right?) to have someone go up with you for the extra baggage allowance on the airplane? Or just pay the airlines for the extra baggage. My friends sent up surfboards in college but I'm not sure what the cost was...

Hope that helps a little!🙂

Sure go ahead  Yeah, I'm not even going to try and take my surfboard. It's actually my kiteboards I need to ship, but "surfboard" takes less explaining.

Thanks for the info Lanikai, that definitely helps!!👍
