Applications for the 2007 summer program will be available in November 2006.
This is not a postbac program nor an MCAT prep program
HCOP supports your dream to pursue a career in medicine
Stanford HCOP identifies highly motivated college sophomores and juniors from educationally and economically disadvantaged backgrounds who seek a career in medicine. We invite you to apply.
The program provides an exposure to critical thinking and structured scientific reasoning. You will have an opportunity to experience medical research, anatomy, cellular biology, academic strategies, MCAT review, mock interviews, and academic advising. Classes are scheduled every weekday from 9 to 5. Most classes are taught by Stanford medical students. Fun and cultural weekend activities are also planned.
Eligibility
HCOP targets college sophomores and juniors who express a desire to pursue medicine as a career. Competitive candidates must:
Be from educationally and economically disadvantaged backgrounds
Have completed their sophomore year in college
Be citizens of, or permanent residents of, the United States
In addition, thoughtful consideration will be given to candidates who:
Have demonstrated potential for academic excellence by taking challenging college math and science courses (e.g., calculus, biology, and chemistry)
Have substantial volunteer experiences
Have demonstrated community or student leadership
Have a commitment to be an advocate and provider of quality healthcare for the underserved and disadvantaged.
The Summer HCOP experience is a season for sowing the seeds of future medical careers. It is a time of tending to academics and community involvement that will help motivate, support, and prepare you to realize your dream of becoming future doctors.Kathryn Fitzgerald, M.Ed., HCOP Associate Director/Programs Director
Would you like to develop a relationship, shadowing a physician by accompanying him or her on hospital rounds? Would you like to conduct medical research and give a presentation about a health project of your choice? Could you benefit from a mock medical school admissions interview? Are you prepared to be academically challenged by courses in cell biology and anatomy? Have you ever dissected a cadaver?
You Can
These dreams and others take shape in the classrooms, in the laboratories, in the clinics, and during medical and health presentations by noted lecturers. These opportunities are realized when you participate in the Stanford Summer Health Careers Opportunity Program.
